Got Gadgets?

Wilbur

cook and bottle washer
Chargemaster, custom dies, custom seater, dial indicator priming tool, runout guage, seating depth guage, seating force guage, etc...

I'm willing to bet a dollar to a donut that I can beat you with your own rifle at 200 yards using a primer knockout pin, a priming tool and a powder drop for loading.

My cases will have the neck turned and that's all - no primer pocket or flash hole work.

I'll clean my case necks only if you require them cleaned.

Wilbur, I'll give you the donuts. I have learned not to bet with cagey old benchrest shooters.

Dude, due to bad memory and laziness I ended up with 25 30BR rounds in which the cases were not resized at all. New primer, 4198 and some bullets. I tried a few on the sighter and fired at least one 5x target IN A MATCH.

Who needs all these gadgets ??

Excellent point...

I wish this forum would deal with the nuances of reading windflags, and flag tails..we discuss powder and humidty, adjusted elevation, temperature.etc.,etc.
The real method of winning is finding a condition that will put two bullets together (5 is better) especially at 200 yards...most Aggs, 2 gun, 3 gun, 4 gun matches are won at 200 yards..!
I believe we could start with how much change in wind direction can be tolerated from flag to flag..not all your flags are going to agree out to 200 yds..
flag tails tend to flip/flutter and drop with unexpected frequency...
Mirage is it more important tha wind speed and direction...how does it correlate...I have shot some of my best groups at 200 when the target went from clear and readable to fuzzy/blurry..the condition fuzzy/blurry occurred when I was shooting on the sighter and I put three shots into one hole..
I went straight to the record and shot 2 shots with that blur, they were touching..the condition cleared up..I stopped, it came back and I shot 3 more for a .376" at 200 yards...I have not seen the condition like that since..
These are the type of things that some of you highly accomplished shooters could be defining and helping novice shooters understand...
If that would be giving away "secrets" then this forum is just a place for the Bill Calfee types to discuss how much they love accuracy...
Why do you think gadgets sell...?
Because the fundamentals and tricks of reading conditions are NEVER discussed in detail...I bet we never see a thread with 50-75 replies on
"How I read conditions"...
Instead we will harp on "water in the bore" for weeks on end...:(

Gadgets

Wilbur, must be a trick question, why 200 yrds. Rbell

Wilbur

Come on man, vendors have to make a living too.
We were discussing Gadjets at the Texas State this week end, and many shooters could not help notice I am still shooting an antequated RL Farley with no ejector. Darned thing only has two locking luggs as well.
You know better than most that if you have a good tune on the Rifle, most of all of the other stuff just goes along for the ride.
My front rest, while being quite functional, won't win any "best engineered" trophys, and my rear bag is an old Bald Eagle that I bought used in about 1998. I think I bought it, the other shooter might have been throwing it away.
Give me a good barrel, some great bullets, and a good solid scope, and the job will get done.
Oh, and my tuner. You can poo-poo a lot of things, but I have learned to depend on that tuner to an extent that I would not want to go back to shooting with out it. You know, that "tune thing"......jackie

eww1350 - secrets!

The entire game of benchrest is that of conditions - all else being equal. The trouble is, all else is never equal. A fine rifle in the hands of a reasonably intelligent competitor and it's lights out. Further, it is unlikely to find yourself at a match absent a fine rifle and a reasonably intelligent competitor. The finer the rifle, the less intelligence required.

The "bet", if you will, tests the worth of perfection overall.

OK - Tuner

An easily removed tuner included in the deal. You shoot with, I'll shoot without.

I'm with Nader on this one. I'd buy you the donut just for the fun of the challenge though. I don't have to many gadgets though so maybe that is cheating.

the Match

Where will this match take place? There is a definate advantage given to one or the other if the contest takes place at someone "home" range.

Hmmm

First, I would never let you use my Rifle. I, above all, know that as a shooter, I am mediocre at best. I can go brain dead at the Bench at the drop of a hat. That is why I strive at all times in keeping my Rifles shooting at a competitive level.
The simple truth is, take MY Rifle away from me, and I go from being the Texas State 4-Gun Champion to being an inconsequential competitor number who didn't do much more than donate his entry fee.......jackie

Dave

I think I will invite ole Wilbur to Tomball. It is just a tad different than Rachels Glenn.
Quote one World Benchrest Team Shooter at The Crawfish. "I am NEVER coming back to this SH-T HOLE.......jackie

Oughta do it at Bench 30 at St. Louis...

Figuring the neck is easy, but Wilbur, how much are you shooting so as to not have to bump?

What????????????????????????????????

Yeah, I guess all those Hall of Fame competitors with their sizing and seater dies are carrying them around and using them just for the fun of it.

Somebody, please, swing by Wilburs place and see if he is all right...................make sure he has not been abducted by aliens or Bill Calfee.

Perhaps this is Wilburs best impression of Bill, just to keep us on our toes..................Don

Neck tension

Did I mention I would shoot with no neck tension....just stick the bullet in with my fingers....
