788 "favorite for br" per j e custom

I built a LV rifle on a 788 sometime around 1980. Initially, I barreled it in 219 Donaldson Wasp and used 225 Winchester as the parent case. Case forming and quality sucked and performance wasn't as good as I had hoped for (high .3's). I re-barrel to 6ppc and the rifle shot pretty well but...

    Has anyone seen this?

I had not looked at this before today. I think, if I wanted to do this (and I don't), I would just do a chamber insert with a short thread at the base (set in with a pin wrench). Should accomplish the same thing. Regards, Bill

    shilen dga bolt

If I understand correctly, the boltface is presently cut for the 22BR. If this is the case, the PPC will fit with considerable clearance. It might be necessary to make an extended extractor. If necessary, one can also bush the face but I think you could get away without it. Regards, Bill

    Firing pin tip shape

Recently, I have started shaping the firing pin tip to kind of a cone with a radius. This for larger pins (like the post 64 Model 70). I started doing this in an attempt to prevent blanking without bushing the firing pin hole. It seems to work. The cone commences at the bolt face (with the pin...

    Savage 99 loose threads

The thing is, since there is very little torque applied when tightening the barrel on, there is no need for a lot of shoulder. Still, I agree there should be a reasonable amount of shoulder contact. Regards, Bill

    Savage 99 loose threads

If the shoulder has deformed, the use of a shim may be appropriate. If it is the threads which have loosened, the technique is to set up the threads by using a radiused punch to move the threads toward the shoulder. Lightly tapping around the threads will do the trick. This is the traditional...

Unknown Steve Kostanich Cartridge on .30 Caliber - Please help

Sounds like a 30 caliber based on the 35 Remington case if your diameter given is at the base of the case. If it is at the shoulder, the case is likely based on 308 brass. Regards, Bill.

Chambering: indicate bore before threading and/or before reamer?

I have always turned and threaded the tenon then chambered. When I first started doing barrel work (1977), turned and threaded the barrel between centers then set up in the steady rest or the four jaw chuck to chamber. I preferred using the steady because the tailstock on the lathe I was using...

    6mm competition match

The claims of high velocities coupled with superb accuracy and extended barrel life, when taken all together, are known by the technical term, " A load of BS". Regards, Bill.

    Ultimate FTR Rig

Jackie, It's interesting to look at the original requirements for "F" class shooting (as written by the founder, George Farquharson) and compare them to what they have become. The original requirements were for any rifle, any sight, fired prone from any rest whether a tripod, bipod or a sack of...

    Shadow line a bore

While there can be no doubt that straightening or bending a barrel will induce stresses, there is some question as to just what the effect may be. Keep in mind, unless the barrel is stress relieved during the manufacturing process, the blank is likely to have stresses residing within anyway...

    Shadow line a bore

Common practice used to involve using a string or wire stretched in front of a window. Looking through the bore at this would produce a definite shadow line which, if curved or broken, indicated a curve in the bore. This worked real well in a bore which was not yet rifled but rifling makes the...

Why I Shoot the 30-30 in Benchrest

The reason for working with the 30/30, or any other old cartridge, should be immediately obvious: because you can and because it's fun. I built my own 30/30 on a modified Ruger 77 (initially built a 30/40 Krag but I wanted to mess with the 30/30). My303 British "F" class rifle is on a modified...

    Barrel Profiling

When I started out, we bought all our barrels as 1 1/4 blanks and contoured them to whatever (barrels were mostly from Shilen, Hart, and Douglas). Even now, I frequently re-contour to acheive proper balance or a certain look. I turn between centers, driving the barrel with a dog. I use a copier...

    Throating for extra speed?

Increasing freebore will reduce pressure and the velocity will also drop right along with the pressure. Load back to the same pressure and you will find the velocity will also be the same or very nearly so. Seating the bullet out into the longer throat until the effective freebore is the same...

Trying to get 69gr Sierra TMKs to shoot 8"twist 22/250

I have used 4350 and 4831 sc with 80 grain bullets with good success. I think the 4831 is too slow for 69's. I just bought a jug of 4451 and have high hopes for it. Regards, Bill.

    Leblonde 13 x 40 for barrel work?

As much as I like good, old stuff, I believe I would pass as well unless condition is exceptional and you are attracted to the machine. For BR barrels, the hole is too small. Regards, Bill.

Rookie Question 101: Recommended Powder and Bullets for a 308 in F Class

Though I have had some success with Varget, I have always gotten better accuracy out of 4895 with 155 grain bullets and 4320 with 175's.. Regards, Bill

    Action truing options

The only reason for a close thread fit is so, when the barrel is removed, the guy thinks to himself "Nice fit". Same thing for a nice, smooth cut and nicely radiused corner at the shoulder. "Nice work". The performance ain't gonna change much. Square threads, I like to do fairly snug but truth...
