How does a VFD integrate with manual lathe and mill speed functions?

I have both lathe and mill on VFD. The lathe is belt drive Jet 13x 36 and I have the belts in the position that produces 1200 RPM on the spindle @ 120 Hz on the motor. The motor is a Siemens TEFC, 2 Hp, 4-pole ( 1750 RPM @ 60 Hz). This arrangement has proven to be completely satisfactory...

Model 70 Stripped Bolt Spline Repair

This problem is only present on post 64's. The back end of the bolt is knurled and a copper alloy brazing washer is placed on the bolt before the handle is pressed on. Then the bolt is furnace brazed at about 2000°. Because of the high temp, subsequent heat treating of the bolt is not a...

How light can a Accutrigger be adjusted

I have a Target action and was able to get the Accutrigger down to a reliable 3 oz. I tried for less, but it was touchy and tended to drop the sear unless the bolt was closed gently. I ended up removing it and building a new trigger based on the Jewell Remington trigger geometry, somewhat...

Time for a new cleaning rod...

If you just need a new coating on an old rod, you can buy heat-shrink tubing in one piece lengths that will cover a rod nicely. I refurbished an old Parker-Hale rod whose coating had failed and it is like new. None of my bore solvents have attacked the polyolefin tubing...

    Model 70 bottom metal?

Here's a good one: http://www.sunny-hill.com/index.html Plus the original and justly famous Blackburn Bottom Metal, which appears to have been bought out by Swift bullets: http://www.americanrifleman.org/blogs/swift-acquires-blackburn-bottom-metal/...

    What size barrel vise bushing?

I make my barrel vise blocks out of a 3" cube of plywood ( glue 3"x3" pieces together) . Drill a hole the size of the barrel perpendicular to the plys. Glass bed the hole to the barrel at the correct location ( don't forget release agent on the barrel) Knock the block off the barrel. Saw the...

    Etcho-O-Matic

The etching method of marking is pretty easy to use and very versatile. I make stencils on the computer. I print the desired text, design, logo, etc, on a transparency and use a simple light box with photo sensitive stencil material to make an actual stencil. Anything you can create on a...

    AR-15 Gas Tube Question

Mid-length barrel(18") is another option. Gas tubes can be bought for that length. Mid-length works better than the carbine length with the AR's gas system, as the barrel port pressure is closer to the original design. RWO

    machinist's level

Leveling a lathe is just a starting point for getting it tuned up. It is more important to put the bed in the same degree of twist that it was in when it was ground at the factory and that isn't necessarily level on both ends. This document explains how to get the spindle alinged with the bed...

    bolt handle soldering

I'm not sure what your concern is, but that's what Otteson reports. Are you thinking that heat treating after finish machining will not allow for any distortion? It might be that that they harden the bolt head and cocking notch selectively with induction coils, thus minimizing the distortion...

    Timing Savage 110 action

All these alledged "defects" in Savage actions may have been present in the older models, but they are not present in my new Precision Target action.. I also think that the receiver is best made coaxial with the barrel if you want the scope to look where the barrel is pointing. RWO

    bolt handle soldering

According to Otteson in his first book " BOLT ACTIONS", Rem bolt heads and handles are furnace brazed with copper at about 2000°F. This procedure was developed to allow subsequent heat treating at 1500°F. without affecting the joints. RWO

Anyone assemble barrels to actions without any lube?

I use Dow Corning G-N Metal Assembly Paste. It is loaded with solid lubricant particles and in my limited experience is gall proof. http://www.dowcorning.com/applications/search/products/details.aspx?prod=01889877&type=PROD It is available in small tubes on the net. It works super as a...

    Rem. bolt head

According to Otteson's first book "The Bolt Action", Rem bolt heads were fixtured with a pin and then copper brazed ( along with the bolt handles) at about 2000°F in a furnace. Subsequent heat treating ran about 1600° so the braze joint was unaffected. RWO

Is the focus of the image and the reticle plane be different?

The idea is that the reticle is at the exact focus point of the objective lens for zero parallax. The exact focus point varies with the distance from the objective to the target. That's why the parallax adjustment is required. If the eyepiece is focused properly on the reticle, them all the...

Colour cased actions, good or bad idea?

Original military mausers were made of low carbon steel and were selectively case hardened for wear resistance. I don't recall what process was used but it was likely molten cyanide salts bath since that system would be suitable for mass production. Color case hardening is usually done with a...

    Jewell Trigger for savage

Here's my version of the Jewell principle applied to a Savage. The factory sear must be modified, but otherwise it is pretty simple. It will go down to 1.5 oz. if necessary. I like 2.5 better. RWO
