X-Terminator

Just wondering if anyone ever tried Ramshot X-Terminator in thier 6ppc?
A search found one or two who did but they thought humidity destroyed accuracy.

I bought a used gun with unknown rds down the tube. Yes, I should rebarrel.
In the meantime I figured why not shoot it and learn something.
Tried 133 first of course. Used Audette ladders at 200yds to find the sweet spots just like every gun I use. 133 shot some nice groups but I always noticed the bullets "walk" on 200yd targets. Next up H-322. Really tight groups but window was always .1gn and changed daily. Outside that window and the groups really got big.

X-Term really nailed it on the Audette. I'm using HBN coated 68 Ultras jammed .035. 29.9gns shoots nicely with necksized brass. Switching to body sized brass 29.6gns shoots even better.
This load has been working well for me day in day out with no adjustments for temps or humidity or aligning of the planets. Lots of 100% humidity in the NorthEast this year.

Usually groups around .180 (100yds)on my relatively wind free jungle swath home range after a few foulers to settle things down. If it throws a flier I know its my fault. Put me in the open and I bite:) Need to buy and learn flags.
Besides a few dry patches I clean every 250-300rds. It was shooting so well I was afraid to touch it:) I attribute the ability to shoot fouled to the HBN. Awesome stuff.

So has anyone else given this cheap, unsexy ball powder a fair shake?

x-term!!

HOWDY ,i used it in my borden lv and it was the very best stuff.i used a lot more of it than you are ,,,, 30.0 g to 31.o up in maine and had great results 65 bt and full length sized cases,,, jim goody

Flags manditory with a BR gun!

:rolleyes: What no FLAGS.... Sorry but this ain't serious testing...:eek:

Seriously... I don't care if there is an assumed "no wind condition".. There is always some slight pick-up let-up out there somewhere... Always..!

Make a flag purchass at THE TOP of your list. Then test that X-terminator Vs. 133 , 322.......

BTW, I like X-terminator in the .100 short 22ppc......... As close to ole BLC-1 there is today...

Thanks for your reply. Good to see theres someone out there not afraid of trying something different. When I switched to FL sizing my brass I admit I did not do a full workup again. I assumed I would need to drop down a tad so I loaded up five of each from 29.9- 29.6 just to see. 29.6 shot better than anything else using necksized brass. Since this spring I've never switched from 29.6 as it always shoots better than I can. Never even tried 29.5 or way up into the 30's. Never tried changing the seating since switching to X-Term either. Its just been working since spring so I've left it. From 55 -95 degrees this one load shoots. So far anyway:eek:
This winter I'll have some time to expieriment some more.

Ok Ok no flags yet. I see your from Oklahoma where the wind comes wipping down the plain:)
I know I need flags. My biggest problem will be finding a range to learn them at. Either that or clearcut my jungle at home and let the wind in. As long as the leaves are on its a fairly windfree valley. Yes, not 100% but unlike most open ranges folks are familar with. I've been known to throw a 10,000,000 candle power spotlight on my 200yd target just to shoot on overcast days.

Flags or no flags I have enough expierience to know the difference between shots walking on paper and puffs of wind. Two totally different animals.
I'm not claiming X-Term is better than anything else. Just asking if anyone else tried it in the 6ppc and with what results. Thnx

I have been reading your post and although I haven't shot that powder it seems to me that if that is the powder that is giving you your best results you should go with it.
Maybe on down the line as you go along you can test out a few other powders.
I shot H335 (ball powder of slightly slower burn rate) in my 6PPC with 68 grain bullets and had some success. But I went away from it because it left a kind of black, goey residue in the bore and other guys complained of the muzzle blast.
I have been looking at trying X-Terminator and Tac in my 257TED or my
6.2HECK. I like the way that Balls Powders meter and their load density.

Since you have shot all 3 powders.
Would you say that the burn rate for X-Terminator
is faster or slower than VV133 and H322??

Tac

I once heard a friend say he was using it in his PPC. Said he tried it and it worked so well he bought all he could find in his area. Also think I remember him saying it took the writing off the heads of the cases but I could have be wrong about that. :D

Yes I have
I am fixing to try and chamber an AR for the 257TED and a less expensive easy to throw powder would be nice.

As to the burn rate I did a little looking. If I had to place a bet I'd say Vihts burn rate chart is closest to reality with those three powders in the 6ppc.
Chronograph does'nt work a great deal of the time in the jungle. I'm running in the 3250- 3300fps range with X-Term and coated pills. Haven't tried getting up into the 3500fps range some folks like to play in. I did with 133 and theres no doubt a lot of potential up there. The 133 Audette says my gun likes the 29.5 range tho as set up that day anyway.

I tried H-335 in my 14 twist 6BR. FLAMETHROWER!! I have a range muffler I shoot through to appease the neighbors. I swear I singed my eyebrows that day. Lots of fireballs. I can understand why the guys on the next bench might complain:D
Left a nice grey fouling in my bore, not bad. Black and gooey is definately no good;(R-15 with WS2 in a 308 is the gooiest thing I've ever seen) I never did follow up on that test. That barrel prefers stiff and clean Benchmark and I'm losing my hair fast enough.

FWIW I pay real close attention to the fouling condition of my tubes. They tell me what they like and its my job to give it to them. My 6ppc seems to like the greyish carbon it gets from X-Term and HBN. I don't argue.

I definately will retry 133 as I have made some changes since then and its only fair to see if they are for the better. First I'll retest X-Term a little more extensively though.

Ramshot powders are some of the finest metering. Very fine granules. Not sure if that would help with your density requirements tho.
I just poured some on paper. H-335 and Tac look exactly the same, very exactly the same.
X-terms granules are roughly 30% smaller and round as oppossed to flat.
I dumped some into a fired 6ppc case and filled to the mouth. Nothing scientific, no drop tubes or swirling.
N-133= 31.00gns
X-Term = 34.44gns
Tac = 34.90 (flat may help in that department)

I've tried Tac in my 308 and 125gn TNT's with some good results. Not sure you could get enough in a 6ppc to erase the writing but I haven't tried:D
You know the accuracy bug better than I. We'll pay what we have to pay but it would'nt bother me to pay less.

The odd thing about Powder

for me at least is what will often work. Who would think H-4198 would work in about every case one puts it in from tiny ones to long ones like the 30-47L, for instance?; certainly not intuative. Re-7 seems the same. It will work in a number of chamberings and acts about like H-4198.

Lots of folks like H-322 but I have never been able to make it work in anything I have tried in. It will shoot in a 30 BR but is SLOW.

Th fellow I mentioned had no idea TAC would work until he tried it. AND, I could not agree with you about the Viht chart. The one in my old Sierra reloading book is about the most accurate that I have seen to date. It shows some of the older powders like 4197 Scott and places it where it belongs in the chart. I happen to know that because I have been using it for a few years. The rest of the charts are not very close, in my opinion.

Allan Hall, shooting a deuce, won the 200 LV at the Super Shoot the year it was introduced....in fact I think it was introduced at that match. I left there with enough TAC to win several matches and just almost won the nationals. The future lots of TAC were not so good as determined by myself and others so we quit shootin' it.
