Woodwork Question?

Not sure if this is the right spot for this question, seemed like the best fit?
I have a shooting bench with a butcher block top. I need to repair the top of it and it is also coming apart where the pieces of the block was glued together. Thought about just coating it with varithane (sp)? but dont know that that is the best solution. The top is a crack/flake and is not on the seam. Thought about fixing it with bedding material??

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Many thanks!,
Dennis

Depends

You say it is a shooting bench. First a few questions.
Is it outside, allready have a finish, if so what kind, ?
What ever you use, you should do a test area for compatability.
Most clear finishes don't hold up too well in sunlight. ( UV's )
If your trying to repair a splintering type of repair a little glue/epoxy/ or even the finish ( used as a glue ) would probably secure it.

If you go with a clear finish and it is outside, plan on refinishing biannually.

CA Glue

If it is a small flake or a small crack, get some thin CA glue and accelerator. Put the glue into the crack or let it flow under a flake. Then hit it with the accelerator. After it hardens, sand it off smooth.
If the crack is too wide for the this stuff to fill, you can get the slightly thicker version of the CA glue and use that along with the accelerator.
For larger holes or big gouges, fill the hole over full with sanding dust to match the wood being filled. Then drip thin CA on it until it is wet. It will heat up and set on its own. Then sand it down to match.

Just don't touch it or get both glue and accelerator on you. It will Blister ya. And don't breathe the fumes.
You can get the glue and accelerator from any woodworking place supply place like Woodcrafters, etc.

This stuff is a woodworkers best friend. ;)

No wood..

How about designing a shotting bench from steel and concrete components..

That will really get the job done..and kept done. ;)

Thanks guys. It is an old Varmint Master bench and is un-treated wood like a butcher block. Segments glued together. It is my squirrel shooting bench and is used outside. Was really not wanting to clear coat it, just repair it and hopefully treat the wood with some kind of oil. Sounds like CA glue and accelerator is the ticket, the crack and flakes are small enough. Not familiar with this product though. Do you have a link handy?

Found the info on it. Now I just need to find a supplier?

tks

Good to hear from you Ron!. Kind of fell of the earth, trying to claw my way back on. Nothing bad, just severely sidetracked. I had not even been looking at our schedule or even been shooting, at all. Ran into one of our local shooters today, he mentioned next weeks 600. I am hoping to make it but have nothing worked up. Will have to try and wing it with something?

CA glue

You can get all the CA glue you might need here at Woodcrafters.

The red bottle is the water thin version. It is good stuff. But like any superglue, It will severly stick your fingers together. Or anything else as well.
Don't breathe the fumes.

You can also buy it at a Rocklers store or the Rocklers online site. They have a different brand but its the same stuff.

When you say "flakes" are you meaning "checking"?
Can you post a pic.
It sounds like your glue joints are coming apart from excessive moisture and then when you store it the wood is drying out and checking. If it's outside or inside wood needs some kind of finish.
I would use marine grade polyurathane for a final finish if you shoot in the rain. Same stuff used on boats.
