So I'm at the juncture at which I must prepare to mate the barreled action to the stock. Just to refresh (and keep me from getting bored while on business here in Ulysses, KS), it's a STiller Cobra Drop Port, Shehane Baby Tracker African Obeche laminate. I am going to make thia a "glue-in". The Cobra action came with the bottom alread machined with tool marks in the flat bottom surface so no "roughing-up" will be necessary. The funnel for the drop port is really cool and will be simple to inlet into the stock with only a small hole on the bottom showing for the spent case to fall through. I can work out the details of ensuring the trigger hanger screws will be accessible after the trigger guard is removed so that trigger removal will be possible. The holes that "would be" used if pillar bedding wre chose are not tapped through, so no solvent, oil, etc from cleaning can seep under the action to place a threat on the integrity of the glue bond. The fit is perfect (it came that way thanks to Bill Shehane). Soooooooooo, I'll soon be ready to start the recipe to bake this cake. My first question is about whether or not to do a semi-thin bedding with Devcon and then use JB Weld to glue it in and make it permanent. What are some thoughts, ideas, and experiences from you guys ??

Thanks as always,

There are two main reasons I like to prebed with a thin layer. One, after it dries I can easily check and make sure all the angles are right and if for some reason something moved wrong, it's easily fixed. Two, helps avoid voids and to much shrinkage.

I just Glue It

On a stock that has a really good fit between the barreled action and the stock, I just glue it in with JB Weld. I have never had one come loose.

But, as Hovis indicted, there are those that feel more comfortable bedding first.

You are correct in what you say about the Cobra. Jerry Stiller says that the glue will actually stick to the anodized finish better than bare aluminum, so do not be tempted to remove it..........jackie

The inletting done by Bill Shehane is really good. I means it's a perfect fit. I'd almost be more concerned over if I'd better remove a 1/16" in depth just to make up for the thickness of bedding/glue. So Jackie, what you say sounds like what I may do. I don't need Devcon for making a nice flat full contacting surface between the action bottom and stock because it already is. And what Mr. Stiller has done was machined (almost looks like a fly cutter pattern) the bottom of the action for roughness, then anodized, so no, I do not plan on upsetting that surface. Anyway, I get home tomorrow early AM and will proceed to get 'er done. I've made many mistakes in my guitar building hobby so I have passed the stages of fear in working with these kinds of things. Make sense outta it first, plan, then just do it. No where the heck did I put the JB Weld...>???

thanks......

Butch,

Funny you should ask. I'm on the way to the Amarillo airport right now (4:45 am). Land at 9:00 in Houston, be in Hempstead by 10:30 am. I left my stuff with him MOnday evening tellin him no hurry I'd be gone all week. Was in Amarillo airport Tuesday about 10:30 am and my cell phone rings. Says "I'm done, you can come get it when ya want." ............... I think we're getting along great!!! I'm ready to get up and running.

Thanks,

Curtis

I picked it up. He was gone but I talked to his mom and dad. The work he did was perfect. I'm off MOnday so I have 4 days to get down to business. Also picked up a ChargeMaster Combo today so I better get some loads cooked up. Oh yea, when I got home (I live alone with 3 cats), there was a box on my doorstep that had 2000 Federal 205M's in it........dang, I just ran out of excuses...all in 1 day.

Curtis,
Cats are a lot easier to deal with when you have to be gone from time to time. I knew that you would be happy with Pete.
