wind flags

I am in the market for a new set of wind flags to replace my old set and before purchasing I would like to hear some inputs as to whose wind flags are being most used or whose you may favor and for what reason.

It seems to me that the price of wind flags is all over the map and I am in doubt that there can be that much difference between them, but on the other hand I am approaching this with an open mind and would appreciate your inputs.

My range has many small errant breezes and is difficult to read, at 100 yds it is not unusual to have all three flags pointed different directions and to have the streamers pointed a different direction from the main vane. It is a difficult range to read but since I do my practice there I need all of the input I can get.

Thanks in advance for your help and advice. - Drover

I bought 4 different sets of flags before I got my Rick Graham flags. They will be my last. Good price, good service and a heck of a nice guy.

Good luck..

I have a set of the Australian made Elliot/BRT/Edgley flags and could not be happier with them. Very good quality and seem pretty easy to read to me. Small ball bearings in the pivot and prop.

They are sold there by Butch Lambert at Shade Tree Engineering, he advertises and posts right here.

flags here is the scoop

rick graham is fair in the price and the product is maybe the best

at major shoots like the cactus the winner was using graham flags, as do most of the tacoma crowd, those flags are catching on

at the worlds at kelblys in 2005 the aussie flags were great just off to my left, much better than the canuck flags we had at the time.

BUT without offending the aussie type they were great but the colors are backwards for the north american market, a suggestion has been made to reverse the colors but I guess the seller (nice guy) will request that change but it may not come.

SO AT A MAJOR SHOOT you are unhappy at the sets of flage to your left and right are different colors,

and if your range has different flags pointing opposite directions you HAD BETTER HAVE THE SAME COLORS AS YOUR SIDE MATES or forget thinking you can read the wind.

I know of noone in the world who can read the flags competently when the flags on either side show the opposite color or your own flags,

think about it

so if the aussie flags can change the color scheme they are as good as the grahams but not as popular going forward in the us of a

try one of each and then decide, but I would recommend grahams and I have both and shoot with fellows who have both.

the fellow at own home range in canada is getting the colors changed to conform with the broader scheme so he can read the flags better.

once again thiknk it through not complaining just explaining

It would be a simple case of a couple of spray cans of fluro paint or some coloured stick on film to change the Aussie flag colours to whatever you wanted them to be.

Doesn't seem like much of a problem when the rest of the flag system is as good as it is.

I have observed a few different brands and I need a new set so have been trying to decide whether to make my own or purchase. There is quite a big difference in the quality of construction and type of construction. Whether or not the better quality of materials and construction makes the flags work better could be debated. I think it's a matter of how much money you want to spend just like many other purchases we make for this sport. The Aussie flags are very expensive and they are also very nice. Someone suggested before to get 1 flag of several different brands and test them together to decide which you like the best. I'm not sure how that would work since you use a whole set of flags to get the whole picture. Good luck with your choice.

Best Flags ??? ....

Rick Graham's flags are the BEST !!! I have Five. Two of the Larger ones for the back end of 200 yards. All are highly visible. Don't forget his Sail Tails. Where do you get them ??? Order here: (206) 214-6484. Ask Rick about the mount inside the box. He can provide them and the attachment for your poles or stands if you need those also.

Jeff, you probably didn't intend come across the way you did.....but being one of the shooters on a Cdn Team I can't help but comment. We did have a variety of flags present. Some folks put in significant time in their flag preparation and managed to shoot fairly well with their flags. The flags I brought down were actally probably the most responsive propellor flag on the field and many were sold on their performance alone. Hell Bill Gammon shot a super 10 shot group if you recall.... I might even have some video footage on the operation of some of the propellor flags on the field at the time. Perhaps you might want to qaulify your statement before using that super broad brush.....to the entire group. Keep'em small....

Here is a small video clip on the flags at the '05 Worlds in Ohio. Take a good look at all the flags for responsiveness. I've temporarily stopped making the flags (2, 3 prop and ball flags) due to costs, but I am revisiting offering them. The prices are obsolete.

Thanks for your patience.

The Aussie propellers are much superior to the plastic daisys. They respond much faster both on pickup and letup. They don't continue to run when the wind quits. They do not slow the flag response down when the wind direction changes as the plastic daisys. The Aussie propellers are in 3 colors and it instantly tells you wind direction and angle. I will have vanes coming in with the colors on the opposite side. You can get mylar at the hobby shop and change the colors on the vanes.

Hi Butch.

You are right, the standard daisys are rather rudimentary. The refined wheels are definitely better but often times out of the price range of many.

Regards,

I know where you are coming from Joe. The cost of construction and import shipping is high. I wish that it were otherwise as a lot of people can't enjoy the best.

carbon river

any experience with these flags?
what about the Hensley flags?

Afte two sets - - -

I finally decided to go with Ball flags because, after watching a lot of flags over the past 10 years, I found that Orland Bunker's flags were the most visible and reacted faster than any other flags I had watched. I then purchased GB Ball flags. ( Orland's flags don't have Dasies)

Orland has his flags painted black on one side and a white with black stripe on the other. For my eyes, they are the most visible combination I have seen. I painted my GB flags black on the plain side after I received them. They work the very best. Black & White - Who would have thunk it ? P

the bad

your flags were great at Vienna, Jefferson!
I rotated benches with the CDN team, and have little flagreading skills, but they helped me a lot. thanks for the good work!
