Wind flag question again

Hi

New guy here. I have a question though.

I just completed building my wind flag. Seems to be very sensitive. I haven't added a good tail yet, just cut up a plastic bag into a ribbon for a tail.

This morning the tail is barley moving. Like 1 to 2 inches. The vane will move dir. before the tail shows any movement.

My question is. At what MPH of wind have you seen bullet movement on target?

I know bullet weight and velocity come into play, but for your particular set up.

When does the wind come into play? Like under 5mph or over 5mph, or do you have to be getting up towards 10mph?

You can play with these questions to your hearts content with a ballistics calculator, such as www.jbmballistics.com or the one at hornady.com. But to give an example, for a 30BR you get one bullet's worth of drift at 100 yards with a 3 mph crosswind. At 200 yards, you get a bullet of drift at less than 1 mph.

Cheers,
Keith

Go to the hardware store and get some surveyors tape it makes a good tail cheap ($2-$3) and the longer it is the less amount of wind it takes to show. However be careful, sometimes real long tails get wrapped up around the stand. As to amount of wind even 5mph matters, it pushes the bullet less than 15mph does of course but it still matters. A dead calm is not always the best condition to shoot in there are things happening, you just cannot see them . It is usually felt a consistent visible amount of wind is more desirable. Ideally you want all your flags showing wind from same direction at a constant velocity. If you shoot 20 years you will maybe see this once or twice for about 30 seconds. Most days you try different conditions and find one that works for you and hope it keeps coming back.

Reading the wind is a lot like playing the piano. You can sit down and read a dozen books about how to play, but sooner or later you have to sit down and do it.

We can all give you advice on what the wind does to bullets, and you can read books. But sooner or later, you will have to sit own at the bench, look over the flags, and see what happens........jackie

If you are shooting a very accurate rifle, to its potential, very small amounts and differences in wind velocity can enlarge a group. I noticed that you said wind flag. To really see what is going on, you will need several. Are there any Benchrest matches near where you live?

Yep, and just wait until you start trying to read those angles! It gets even harder!! Good luck and enjoy!! Lee

I hooked up with Glenn about 11 years ago in this game as well. I am one of the associates that shoot with him here and around Dallas... I can tell you that BR is not anything like golf... You can learn a golf course playing it over and over again. You will find out where to put the ball and how much angle is on a certain side of the green but when it comes to the wind and flags man oh man what a interesting thing to read.. And every range is different not just everyday but every time you go up to the line....It is still one of the most enjoyable things I like to do is go to the range..I even put big fat black arrows on the sides of my wind vanes to help show the angle of it or in my case just to tell me the direction the wind is blowing.. Ha Ha Ha...

It just takes time to figure things out but you will enjoy this sport and enjoy building your own componets and who knows you may come up with a item eveybodys wants !!

Take care and best of luck and stay with it...

Sand Rat,
I noticed that your post says "you finished your wind flag" not wind flag's if you built one you are probably not done as you need about 4-5 for 100 yards and 5-6 at 200 yards. Some guys use more than the amount stated and some less, but a set is what you need. Good Luck and shoot as much as you can and keep a good note book on condition's.

Thank you gentlemen. Yes I have only completed one vane type flag. I need to get more materials to complete the others. I wanted to make one to see how it worked. Mill Creek rifle club in DeSoto Ks is close to me but I can never find out any info when the benchrest shooters are their till its all over. I sure would like to watch a match some time. I'm not a member but I'd sure like to watch and learn and I've got a lot to learn.

Thanks guys.
