as there are numerous copies of the remington 700 action, why hasn't anyone tried to duplicate the winchester 52? or has someone done it and i didn't realize? if there are trademark/copyright issues, why do they not seem to affect remington 700 copies? thanks for any help understanding this.

There are some copies

H&R made some copies and have been sold by the CMP. They are very close to a 52. I think there were some copies of the 52 Sporter made in Japan a few years ago as well. I think they are an expensive rifle to copy; perhaps why there haven't been many copies made.

Remchester and Jewellchesters

If they had a trigger pattern at least a little similar to to older Winchester Mircro-motion trigger, then I would agree they were a copy.

Why would you buy a copy when there are still quite a few original M52 Target Rifles around that are not terribly high priced and could be bought for their actions?

As mentioned above, replica M52 Sporters were made in Japan a few years ago and are widely available on the used gun market. Original Sporters, even in poor condition, are priced too high to provide actions. In excellent condition, prices are astronomical. I've seen M52C Sporters sell for $7000+. Ouch!
