Which new barrel.

Hey guys, I am ready to re-barrel my well used Suhl 150 22BR. (10.5# and up class) I would like some input on what you guys think is the best shooting rimfire benchrest barrel currently availble. Any ideas on a particular reamer would help me out a lot. Thanks for your help.
 
Rock Creek with Metford rifling gets my vote. Give it to a gunsmith that knows how to chamber a barrel (like Gordon Eck). That's the best reamer advice I can give you.
 
My Gene Davis 40X has a reverse taper Benchmark barrel and I am extremely happy with it...

+3 for Rock Creek Metford but please hold off until I have mine on a rifle please and Bill B has tuned it. Don't want such a run on the market some of us cannot get one before the season starts. bob
 
Really, Ed told us he did not make a reverse taper any more,and had no intentions in doing a program to do so. How long have you`ve had this barrel? wjc

Good question as to when I got it. Think it was this year. I just called Mikel Shilen to check when I got it. Wade Hull said they recently removed the programming from their CNC contouring lathe. You are right, they are not available now. If there is enough demand they would program it again to do them.

Well, I was wrong. I bought 2 barrels in 8-2008. One was a reverse taper which I think ended up with Joe Freidrich The other is a .910 straight ratchet 4 groove 16 twist. Ed Shilen taper lapped it for me. I guess I will stay with CF and don't need the barrel. I ordered a #3 CM barrel for my 40X receiver. Sorry that I brought up the reverse taper.

I just got a Martini from MT Guns with a 1:16 twist 3 groove Benchmark barrel and have found it to be my most accurate barrel to day. If I were to do it again, I was go with Benchmark again.

I am a true "babe in arms" when it comes to 22 custom barrels.

Butch, I am curious about this #3 barrel for a 40x reciever, If this is for a rimfire. what are you building if you dont mind telling me . thanks, T
 
Butch, Thats what Im working on, I have a 40x being blued at present. I have a old like new 700 adl, dark walnut with some good figure. I dont have the barrel ordered yet. I was thinking a # 3 that would fit right in. are you getting a shilen? and what type? Thanks. T
 
I am going to use a Shilen#3. I'm having it tapered lapped. #3 is the stock Remington contour. Sounds like you have a nice project started.

I just got in line and didn't specify grooves. Ed has been out of the shop. I'll get in touch with him next week and bend his ear. I really doubt for a regular plinker or RF hunting rifle that it will make any difference. It will depend more on my ability as a shooter.
