I read here where people are chambering and indicating on the throat. I am a newbie not perceiving how the set up would look. I know a long indicator contact point is used and does anyone recommend an indicator already set up for this type of measurement. Pictures of the set up would be great also you know the thousand word thing.:) Do I understand that you indicate the bore with a range rod or pin gage then pre-bore the chamber then set the indicator so that the contact point rides inside the barrel on the lands and groves of the bore to center up then finish chambering? f21sh:D PS looking for a quick response MSC has a 30% off sale with free shipping today black Friday only thanks :D

You will also need a magnetic base for it.
To learn how to set it up I would recomment getting the Gordy Gritters chambering video from Grizzly. Even if you don't use his method to setup for chambering barrels you will learn a lot from it.

Here is a small clip from the video.

Indicator

I use the little Mitutoyo 513 series, (.0001 graduations), it has a 3/8 diameter body. This requires you to pre-drill with a drill around 13/32 diameter, then you can reach in where the throat is going to form and indicate. Of course, after you pre-drill, you bore the chamber true with that throat area.

With the regular stylus, you can reach in for cases as long as 308 Win, but for longer cases, you need the longer stylus.

I mount mine in my Aloris Tool Holder that has the little "V" for boring bars. The indicator comes with a mounting rod suitable for this purpose......jackie

The most precision dial indicator made today is the Interapid. Available for sales and service from www.longislandindicator.com , eBay , or several major tool suppliers like MSCdirect.com ,

Go to the Long Island site first and read their assessment of the various brands. They have been in business for many years and service and sell all the major brands.

The beauty of this indicator, besides its superb accuracy, is that you can get probes for it in size ranges up to 5" long. They ain't cheap, about $280 for a 1.5" diameter dial with 0.0001" graduations.

This is a typical setup with the Interapid and a 2.5" probe. This setup shows a 1.5 dial with 0.0005" graduations. The 0.0005" is what I use for the initial setup since it has 0.06" travel and the 0.0001" has only 0.016" travel.
