I'm getting ready to order a 30br reamer and was just wonder what the consensus is on maker, free bore, etc. Who is using what and why. I do plan on getting the removable pilot type.

Thanks

Dan, I am assuming you are talking about a 30BR dedicated to 100-200 yard Varmint for Score Competition. If you are, then the bullets dictate your choice. The vast majority use between 110 and 125 grn bullets, based on jackets in the 1 inch length range.

The "zero" freebore is by far the most popular. In fact, if you just call Pacific Tool and Gage, (Dave Kiff), they will have exactly what you want. We generally call the most popular reamer the "Robinette", as Randy's grind is probably the most popular.

If you have read this Forum much, you probably know that some of us use a reamer that is identicle to the Robinette, except it has an overall longer trim to length. This is because of the way cases are made. The traditional method of necking up the 6BR to 30 cal will produce a case that is a about 1.500 long. The Robinette Reamer produces a chamber that accepts this length.

The other way of making cases is by "blowing" them out. We do this with a special barrel that allows you to shoot a full loaded 6BR case in that barrel, and what comes out is a perfectly straight non neck turned 30BR case that retains much more of the originol 1.560 length of the originol 6BR. The reamer used for this method has a trim to length of 1.540. All you have to do is turn a few thousanths off to fit the .330 neck, and you can go to the line with them just like that.

If you are just starting out, I would go with the standard Robinette, as it is a proven entity. The wheel has pretty well been invented in regards to the 30BR. A lot of shooters like the blowout method, because it is easy, and produces perfectly straight cases...........jackie

Thanks Jackie, I am indeed talking 1-200 yard VFS, and the bullets I make are 118gr, on a one inch J4 jacket. The barrels that I have now were chambered by Dwight Scott using a .015 freebore reamer, and I'm pretty sure it was made by Henricksen. I bought a Henricksen reamer from Dwight when I started having him chambering my 6ppc barrels. I have been shooting 30br 100-200 for about 3 years now and have decided to chamber my own barrels, not because I think I can do a better job than Dwight or that I'll save money. I'd probably have to chamber 30 barrels for myself to break even on this project, this is a just because I want to project.

Dan, IMO a reamer with zero, or very close to it works well with the bullets you are making. I'll make a widget for you with my reamer. It's a zero freebore Robinette style reamer. Should give you a good idea of where the bullet will be in the case.--Mike
