What is "Factory Class"

First of all, forgive me if this is not the proper Forum to ask this, but if it isn't could someone point me in the right direction? I have NO idea about shooting in Competition, but I have heard that there is a Factory Class that I might be able to shoot my "box stock" Savage 22-250 Model 10 in...with out being embarassed to tears showing up on the line with it. What are the requirements/parameters to compete in this Class? Thanks guys...:eek:
 
I'm no expert at all since I don't shoot any competition that has a factory class but, as I understand it, that's a class for shooters exactly like yourself that wants to compete but not against full blown target rifles. In other words, only factory rifles with no, or very little, modifications are allowed to shoot in that class so the playing field will be level. Good luck.

We shoot Factory Class in our local matches. You'd be surprised how many people have fun even when they can't get an IBS 250 sticker...

Essentially it's a class for factory built rifles. If we have a lot of "Factory" shooters in our matches we break the classes down even further. A strictly stock factory rifle qualifies for "Factory". A modified factory rifle goes into "Custom" class. A third class is for the true bench guns. We give the same prizes to the Factory" winner and the "Custom" winner that the guy who won the BR class gets.

Factory is a good way to try benchrest shooting without spending a ton of money before you even go to a match.

If you choose to try out a match that includes Factory Class, make sure your gun is sighted in at the match distance. Make sure you are using your most accurate load. Take hearing protection and arrive early. You will need rests for your gun. I occasionally use a block of wood and shot bags filled with bird seed for rests when shooting Factory.

Find out where matches are held in your area and visit one.
 
We live in Skaneateles, NY during the summer, and Port St.Lucie, FL during the winter. My local Club would be Skaneateles Rod & Gun. I would also like to add my location(s) to my "Profile", but don't know how...

I shot a 250-20X with a Savage in 22-250 a while back. Shame I couldn't have gotten another 2 X's. The score was, admittedly, never repeated.
 
Factory

We are getting ready to crank up a club match schedule for 2008 at Tomball Gun Club in Texas, andone of our classes will be "Factory'.
Our rules will be:

Factory Rifle: "Rifles that are readilly available to the public that are maufactured by a recognized mass production Factory. The only modifications will be bedding, re-crowning of the barrel, (if work can be performed without removing the barrel), and trigger. Unmodified Military Rifles, including AR-15 and similiar designs that are mass produced, will shoot in Factory Class. Rifles that are built by limited production facilities that feature more advanced components will shoot in Modified Class. Any caliber, any sights".

Modified Class: "Rifles that have extensive modifications, where the main serial numbered component, (action or reciever), was originolly part of a Rifle from a recognized mass production Factory. Stocks must be "factory style", no stock for which the primary purpose would be part of a Benchrest Rifle will be allowed. Any caliber, any sights".

Benchrest: "Any legal firearm".

The legality of a particular Rifle for a class will be determined by The Match Director and Referes.

On that particular day, that "Factry Rifle" would simply become what ever class it was legal to enter. If it was legal for HV, it could shoot Varmint for Score. If it weighed 10 pounds or less, and met the other criteria fo HBR or Varmint Hunter, then that is what it would be.

For instance, if a shooter had a Factory 223 Savage Varmint Special, he would be a legal HV. If it did not weigh over 10 pounds, and mounted a 6x scope, it would be legal for Varmint Hunter. Change it to 308, (or any legal capacity case), and he could shoot HBR........jackie

Charles,I would like to say that when the USBR centerfire rules were wrote ,I took a bunch of ideas from posts on here about having a real factory class,along with many emails from shooters and folks that hold and run match's..I believe they are about as close to being something most agreed on that is out there at this time..I will stand by them as written but will not fight over what is and what is not, with anybody..I have seen 40Xs ,Coopers, and Kimbers win but I have also seen 700 Rem's ,Winchester Stealths,and Savage's win...As best I can say,Factory is just factory........

Absolutely not.

Frankly I find Francis explanation a little confusing.
The IBS rules encourage the hosting club to run a factory class to allow entry level shooters a place to compete without the commitment to a full blown Benchrest rifle. However since many different people in many different areas have different ideas what should constitute a Factory rifle and how many if any modifications should be allowed it was felt it could best be administered at the local club level. For that purpose IBS stays completely out of trying to set the rules and standards for factory class. However if you have a rifle that falls within the rules of a particular IBS class and you wish to compete in that class and you win that is fine. You have won, it's as simple as that. You get any awards, stickers, or patches that are due you.

However local trends and Ideas of what should be allowed or not allowed is probably one of the reasons you are not likely to ever see a real factory class in either Major Benchrest Organization, not to mention it would be very hard to enforce . As an example when the shooters at my club set up the Factory rules it was decided to limit Factory class scopes to 24x some other clubs less than half a state away allow any power scope in factory class the factory shooters at my club simply did not feel that a 36x scope would be likely to be found on a Factory rifle that someone will use for normal everyday use. If the factory class shooters decide they want to be able to use higher power scopes it can be decided at a local level and no need to change a national rule.
