What is a 222.5?

Like the title says What is a 222.5? Does anybody have a picture next to a regular 222 Rem case?

Those that I had, done by [the late] Don Judd, were simply mid-way between the .222 and .222 Mag:capacity near identical to a .223. RG

IIRC, the 222.5 was Ed Shilen's brain child. If so, he and the Mrs. cleaned some clocks with it in their day. If I get a chance, I'll look in my old PS stuff. I think there was some talk about it in one of their annuals.

My understanding is that it's made by running a 222 reamer in to the length of a 222 mag.

Wouldn't that be a .222Mag?:eek::confused: Running the reamer (.222) half way between made the .222&1/2.;)
I shot, what to this day, would be some of my best 200 Yd. group Aggs with those barrels, and PCBC (Mike Prokosch) 52 GR. bullets. RG

The 222 has about a .060" longer neck than the mag, so you have to push the shoulder back that amount when forming 222 1/2 cases.
The result is a case with a volume close to that of a 223, but with a longer neck.

Stan Buchtel had a 222.40 and I had a 222.35 all it is the shoulder. 40 stands for 40 degrees and 35 stands for 35 degrees.
 
Yes, what has been said...but it shoots like the hammers of hell when done on a Benchrest rifle. I sold mine to Bob White to get enough money to build a 6PPC and often wished I had done something else. What really made me wish is when the grandson of the fellow I bought it from found me and asked to buy it back. I would have given him the rifle if I still had it.
 
222.5

Interesting wildcat and very accurate. Pictures attached I hope.

I'm not going to get into the steps involved in forming the case but it's a fun cartridge and capable of good accuracy.
I bought the rifle through the Classifieds on Benchrest Central in February of 2011. Hope all this helps

IIRC- I spoke with Larry Baggett about this one and also a 222.7. Everything above fits with what he told me. Also, 10-15 years ago Mike Bellm developed and idea that give s rough approximation to this. You start with a 222 Rem Mag case and run it through a 223 die. He rethroated Thompson Contender 223 chambers and extended the neck .010. It eliminated the poor chamber/throat that TC had done. I shot my first tiny group with a 14" barrel using this cartridge. 3 shot group was about .080.

I had all three...222, 222.5 and 222mag. The 222 and 222.5 were all out Benchrest rifles while the 222mag was all out except it was a Remington XBBR. If I guessed, I would say the 222.5 would agg best but it would be a close call over the 222. The Remington was a rock solid, day in and day out, week in and week out .3XX rifle while the other two were .250 rifles. I think they were all Remington actions but the all out jobs had sleeves and looked cooler than jello.....with their somewhat extravagant wooden stocks carefully hollowed here and there to make weight. The 222 was a LV rifle and didn't have a lot of solid wood!
