Western States Regional Benchrest Results - Ione, CA March 17th & 18th 2012

I know many of the competitors are anxious to see the final results of our match in Ione, CA this weekend so I am getting the scores posted now with commentary and pictures to follow.

I just want to thank all the dedicated shooters who traveled from Washington State, Oregon and Southern CA, in some of the worst weather we have had all winter to participate in this match. Braving all that weather to get here they were rewarded by getting to shoot in rainy, windy, muddy and cold conditions. In spite of the weather some amazing scores were shot. A tip of my hat to Matt Kellerman and Chris Lovitt who we were able to shot the maximum 250 score on a target during the match. This was truly fantastic shooting considering the conditions.

Jim in Sacramento
The Unlimited Class was shot at 50 yards in the most trying conditions of the weekend!
The Sporter Class and Unlimited Class Matches were 50 Shot Matches shot on Sunday in more trying conditions!

Jim, Wayne, and all the others that worked so hard to put on a fine match, thank you. Yes, the conditions were truly awful mostly, which underscores the fantastic efforts of some of the shooters (250's in THAT mess is incredible). Not only was the wind fairly ridiculous at times, the rain and ever-present COLD multiplied the issues. I was truly humbled ... I (think) I mostly did poorly because my hands were numb most of the time, and once my shoes were wet thru, I was fairly miserable ... the others flat outclassed me! I was done for! .

Yet still, it was a good time, buoyed by the fellowship and camaraderie of the other shooters. The meals shared, stores told,, tipping of brews and and discussions toward improving future Airgun events alone was worth the near thousand miles of driving.

I think Jim forgot to mention that the "UNLIMITED" match was shot at 50 yards... all the others were shot at 25 meters. I tried to post the combined totals, but the formatting was lost when I posted it. Jim will have to post it, I guess.

It sure was fun getting together with old friends... and meeting some new ones! Even the cold, wet and windy weather couldn't dampen our spirits.. Those back east folks know what it's like to shoot in these conditions.. it was really unusual for that kind of cold weather to make it that far south into California.

Wayne

Hi Dan,

We used the 25m international target (same as we used at the worlds) for all events except the 50 yard Unlimited match, where we used the "World Rimfire & Air Rife Benchrest" 50m target.

Wayne

Great turnout and awesome scores for those conditions! Heck, those are some awesome scores even for great conditions!

Great shoot! Well attended and Great scores. JD loved the videos and pictures. Lots of scores over 240's even in LV and Sporter. The two 250 with high X count outstanding!!
A few of the shooters could learn how the Northeast shooters come prepared for any weather. See picture of AL and Penny at one of my Spring shoots.

Only time I regret living in TEXAS. When I see a fine turnout for a great game. Only in my dreams one the largest cities in the US.

Question on the production class. Seems like some hot rifles and crossovers.

Bob

There was no "Production Class". Maybe you are meaning Sporter, which had much broader rules?

LD,

What were the rules? Is this just a Western thing or is it a new US class. Looks like they were heavy varmit same o.....

Hi Bob,

The Sporter class was intended to create a class for air rifles not specifically designed for competition. The kind of rifle owned by 90% of the people who shot air rifles. No USFTs, EV2's, Steyrs, FWB's need apply. Marauders, AA400s FX Royales, Rapids, Air Wolfs, R1s, R9s, ProSports etc., etc. Also no mechanical rests, soft bags only. The intent of the class was to create a match where the average air gunner could come and participate and feel at home with the equipment that he currently has. 50 shots at the World 25 meter target. It turned out to be a lot of fun, and very competitive. This is a class that I have envisioned for a while and I thought I would give it a test flight at this match. I hope that it takes off as I think there are a lot of people who would like to compete but may be intimidated by some of the specialized equipment used in the benchrest sport.
