Scale adjustment
Somebody mentioned using check weights to "adjust" a scale. What does that mean to Y'all? I know that scales have adjustment screws but you have to understand more than the average bear to fool around in that neighborhood. Messin' with that "span" screw is bad news. You might get the scale to read exactly what is stamped on the check weight and a rifle that is actually 1/4 ounce over suddenly becomes 3/4 ounces over. If both the 10.5 and 13.5 weights are within a half ounce you did good. Happiness is having a regional instrument guru on hand.

The rules give you a half ounce for scale error.
The check weights are used to verify the scale is within a half ounce - either way.
Rifles are then weighed at the scale's face value without compensation.
A scale that doesn't meet the half ounce criteria should not be used. A scale that's within a half ounce is good to go.

Remember that the half ounce is for scale error and not plus or minus rifle weight "leeway". If the actual weight of your rifle is 7/16 ounce over and the scale reads 5/8 ounce high you'll be 1/8 ounce over.
