We Just Purchased A “New” Lathe

I put the word new in parentheses because it is not new, it is a used machine.

We have been wanting to get rid of that 40’ LeBlond for some time. It was bought years ago for a specific contract, and while we still use it, it is a very cumbersome machine for the type of work we do now. We needed a lighter, more user friendly machine.

We found a really nice 37’ American Pacemaker at Belmont Machinery in Chicago. It is a twin carriage machine, hard ways, all in all, an excellent Lathe.

I flew to Chicago Monday and looked it over. It actually exceeded my expectations.

We have worked out a deal, they will take the LeBlond off our hands, we purchase the America,

It will be here Dec 5, in the mean time we need to get the LeBlond ready to pick up.

Here are some pictures. This Machine is going to be a nice addition to our Lathe capabilities.

Please a'splain to this farmboy about "twin carriage"....... does this mean you have two travelers on the main ways? TWO of those 4ft wide carriages you show in the pic? Like you cut in two places? Leapfrog? Or use them as steady's for each other? Do they travel in tandem? Separate drives?


My poor haid....but I'm just curious as a kitten....
 
Holee Koww that rigger better be good! Trailer sagging and twisting, lathe sagging, potholes....... glad it ain't spring coming out of Chi-Town on them Midwest roads :)


hah, I just noticed the spread axles on that trailer.....
 
Al, two carriages on a long bed Lathe are a huge plus. Simply put, I allows you to work each end of a long workpiece at the same time. Not a necessity, just a huge plus.
 
You could probably chamber one of these 16 inch cannons on that thing.

Jackie bought it for unlimited barrels. With the two carriages, he can chamber and crown at the same time...

Beautiful machine, Jackie. If you don't mind me asking, what does something like that cost?

Reminds me of my early days in a shipyard.......No I didn't run them....Just saw them make stuff for me......

Not as much as you think.

Large manual lathes are not in that much demand. Many newer ones are converted to CNC if profitable, but the machine has to be in as new condition.

This Lathe was manufactured in the ‘60’s, and was bought by the Government to machine shafts for non nuclear submarines and smaller surface vessels. It went out of service in the ‘80’s and was put in government storage.

Belmont Machine bought it out of Government Storage.

They wanted $150,000, there is a shipping charge, and of course we have to set in up. It’s on 440 volts, so we will have to purchase a transformer. Everything else is pretty standard stuff.

With what we are getting in trade, we will have about $140,000 invested. Not a lot considering the quality of the machine, and our need for it.

I paid less for my house. And I live on the coast of California. And I'm sure a few others on this forum paid less for theirs, too.

Kinda puts the realities of the small business owner in perspective, doesn't it?

And I bitched when I had to replace a $400 water heater at my pad...

The next time somebody snivels about your shop rate, Jackie, tell them what you paid for that 50+ year old machine that is gonna make their boat float.

Very nice looking Machine and it appears it would not have alot of hours on it based on the time frame it was used. Thanks for sharing Jackie.

It is no wonder it gets tougher to compete with the maqchinery and knowelege t5hat people have good luck on your cannon barrel may it shoot zs jackie w2atch your fingers

I don't know, but definitely more than what I paid for it. It's for rent, if you're interested:)

We're in escrow on a new one. The new one is DEFINITELY not less than Jackie's new lathe.

Back to having a house payment...
