Wants to try Benchrest

Where would I go to shoot at in southern IL? I'm around 70 miles from St Louis. I have shot alot of trap, but i'm bored with the shotgun sports. If I show up at a benchrest shoot are the shooters friendly? Rifles have always interested me. After reading here off and on for a couple of years it looks like fun but you had better bring your "A plan" to a shoot.

I used to drag race alot, benchrest reminds me of drag racing and the shotgun sports remind me of stockcar racing. Thanks in advance for any help

Give Ron Hoehn a call. Here's his site: http://www.benchrest.com/hoehn/. He can direct you to a Benchrest match. Are benchest shooters friendly? YES! That's a BIG YES. Art :)

Benchrest shooters are some of the greatest folks I've run into. I've shot a ton of trap, a ton of skeet, and some other stuff. The benchrest folks are as good as any and better than most.

Give it a whirl.

I agree with Art, call Ron Hoehn and he will hook you up with some match info. While your attending the match ask questions and find a willing mentor buddy. Thats what I did. :)

The Gulf Region has two accomplished shotguners competing in point blank benchrest Britt Robinson and Nick Marino. Both are tough as nails and great competitors.

They are also two of the nicest guys you'll ever wanna meet.....

Thanks Guys for all the help!

333smithy, I know what you mean about Britt being a tuff shooter. I've seen Britt shoot trap and live birds. Man he sure can shoot fast. Plus he is one heck of a nice guy.

Get with Ron like everyone said. He can probably set you up with a loaner rifle to try out. Shooters are very friendly and you'll have a good laugh to....there sure are some charactors over there. The first match is around the end of Feb. Do a search for the St. Louis Benchrest Club and go to their website. Very nice range.

The reason most BR shooters are so friendly is that they are like dope peddlers. They are just trying to get someone else "hooked". :p:D:D:D

Doug

Welcome aboard, lots of us old Drag Racers out here. Get a decent gun and get out here and start shooting.
Important - Get a mentor = saves money down the road.

Marty:)

Yeh

Every time we say here on Benchrest.com, "give Benchrest a try, you will love it", we get a kickback from various manufacturers. I plan on spending my 2009 contingency on a cup of coffee on the way to the Range in the morning.

Not sure I will have enough for a Do-Nut. Several manufacturers cut my payback to a percentage of my monetary winnings.:D

You got that right! I managed to get three hooked this past year (although only two wound up attending registered shoots).

Mr. Kennedy I know nothing about Illinois or the ranges there, but when you find one by all means go! Tell them you are wanting to try the sport and everything else will fall into place. I typed a similiar post this time last year and I made one of the best decisions of my life. My son and I showed up and knew nothing other than the fact we liked to shoot. The members of the club took us to raise. We have since traveled to other states to compete and have yet to meet a person who was not glad to see us or to help us with whatever we needed, or to answer a question or offer guidance. Mr. Kennedy you enter this sport and you will find a group of people unlike any I have ever run across. As far as bringing the "A Game", bring whatever you have--I promise the rest will take care of itself.

I'm beginning to belive this... I'm trying to get a fix now!
