Upright bluing tanks?

Now I do bluing quite a lot and have the usual bluing tanks.
But how about having them upright?
Could be a 4" pipe with a bottom and a maybe a heating element wrapped around it?
I see smaller surface to evaporate as a plus.

Anyone tried this?

Seems like it would be hard to control the heat or even know what the temp was in the bottom of the tank as apposed to the top. Then you have the problem of stirring in water to bring the temp down if needed.

From my experience which isn’t all that much it sounds like a problem. I think it would be fine for the soap and solvent and even the rinse water, but maybe not the salts.

You will find it very difficult to maintain an even operating temperature in this position.

Bluing tanks are most often heated by a gas flame with a burner running the length of the tank.

It is very hot for any other heat source.

Having lids made would be more productive.
I had lids for my tank setup.
It has been in storage for many years now.
