Tuners on fluted barrels???

The late Skip Otto was a great proponent of fluted barrels. He used fluted barrels on all of his rifles....even his rail. He also offered fluting at a very reasonable price. Now, Billy Stevens offers excellent fluting and will remove as much weight from a BR barrels as needed.

Since some of these tuners weigh 6 ounces or more, I wonder if they could work on a fluted barrel? What do you think?

The barrel in the attached picture is a HV Krieger reduced from 6 pounds to 5pounds 2 ounces. James Mock

James, I'm not sure that is the answer. Even a buddy deal will have you with a lot invested for a throw away part.{barrel} I have only fluted a couple barrels and will not spend the time to do it to make weight. If it would last 3000-5000 rounds, then it would be cost effective.

If the lighter barrel profiles work with tuners then there is little reason to flute IMO. There is some thought that the lighter profiles will tune easier than the heavier stiffer profiles. Like Butch said, putting that extra money in a barrel that will be toast in a year is likely not the best investment one could make.

Fluted barrels

How much are you spending on fluting? How long is it taking? I can flute with my Bridgeport and do a barrel (5 or 8 flutes) in 30 min. after the index head and center is set up. I know this isn't the ideal setup for fluting, but it does work OK.

I shot a .18xx agg at the Cactus 2 weeks ago with Jackies tuner and a fluted barrel. It looks like it should work!

Russ-

I thought your barrel looked a little anorexic...

btw-nice shooting, I wished I could have shot decent on Saturday. That's the way it goes sometimes.
