Trying to start in benchrest shooting

Greetings all.
I am trying to get into the sport. But now I'm wondering if I have started off in trouble.

I bought a slightly used Savage mdl 10FP .308 with the Accu-triger with a BSA md 624x44 scope. But after reading of the troubles with the ring holes not lining up I wonder if I goofed?

Should I try and trade it off and start over? If so can anyone provide be with a link or advice as what rifle, stock and scope to get? I'd like to stay with the .308

I live in La Junta, in the far south east part of Colorado. The local club only has 100, 200, 300 yard rests, and only 3-4 people that are interest the sport. That means that locally there is no one with any really good info or equipment. Does anyone where in Colorado I might find someone or a club that is active in the sport.

The closest point-blank BR range to you is in Ault, CO. Northern Colorado BR Shooters are a great bunch of guys, always willing to help. Send me an e-mail and I will get you contact info for members up there who can help

There are a lot of guys on here from CO.
I started with the 10FP .308. It is now slightly used and shoots great.
After getting all the proper equipment and reading a lot.

I was shooting local club score matches. Nice guys. It was a year or so before I saw a custom rifle. So I understand the curve.
A Custom rifle makes all the difference.
The old guy sold me a 6PPC. And the old guy's best advice. "Just buy the good stuff. You will eventually."

Extreme Accuracy by Mike Ratigan. I think he lives out there.
Mike does a great job with the book. He explains everything about short range BR.

Most accurate for .308. 168 SMK. 41.8 IMR-4064 from Sierra site.

I also agree about buying good solid equipment right off the bat. I have spent lots of money getting to where my equipment is today. I am a wheeling dealing type of fella so i didnt ever loose any money, just trigger time! I am still pretty new to benchrest myself,but i read all the time, and i am surprised m=no one has mentioned the BR case yet. If your range is 100-300 the 6BR will put you on top. I am also not a savage fan. They feel extremely cheap to me and i havent ever brought myself to spending money for one. They do shoot though, there no arguing that point. I would sell your rifle and spend the rest of the winter looking for a nice used 6BR no turn chamber. Good luck and enjoy yourself! Lee

I'm so new at this that I have not hears about the 6BR. Is this a cartridge that will work in the .308, or do I need to find a rifle in 6BR? What should I look for in a used rifle.

are you saying the scope rings do not line up ? if so an easy fix is the plactic off set ring inserts...made right there in northern co...burris.

308 is a good round.

you probably need a better scope....i have little faith in that brand in benchrest.

I was reading on some forums that the rear ring set's 2 screw holes are out of alignment. So I was asking if anyone had run into this defect in the Savage 10FP. I am as you can guess finding it hard to get good info when you live out in the sticks.

What type of competition are you looking for? If it's 100, 200, 300yd Benchrest. Then you really need to heed the advice of going to som Benchrest Matches. The king of 100, 200, 300 yd BR is the 6mmPPC...period. If you shooting factory rifle matches, a savage will get you heading in the right direction.

You can check this yourself.
Remove scope bases. Look down the reciever to the end of the barrel.
The way the light reflects. Is a straight line. Line up the light. Your screw holes should line up. 4 in a row. Perfect line or call Savage and get it fixed.

I started reloading 1986. 1 gun shop for supplies and 1 book.
Never heard of Midway or NBRSA or IBS or Benchrest Or Sinclair..........
I was near San Diego, CA. Sounds nice, don't it.
But, they were at the end of the rope/supply chain.
They still ship Veggies from the Imperial Valley, through San Diego, to LA and then back to San Diego.

Maybe Rodney will pipe in.....
 
Regarding your options.

Hi there from accross the pond, i have been a shooter for many years, I even shot for the army at bisley at 1000 yards with a converted Lee Enfield Mk4 from .303 to 7.62 NATO or .308 to you guy's. There is nothing wrong with a 308 at distance. keep useing it; it will reward you with a lot of fine targets, providing you get Braas, Bullit and Powder to suit your rifle and don't forget the amount of charge, a 1/2 % difference will make a BIG difference to the balistics of the bullit. The scope if it is a REAL BSA whats wrong with it; the British Small Arms co have made some very fine weapons and equipment, before I start splashing out on a 1500 dollar or more scope get the rings and ring mounts sorted first. Lets face it MONEY won't make you a great shooter. YOU DO with experience! remember its easy to get 98 out of a hundred, you can get that with about 6 months shooting, the next 2 shots will only take you another 20 years. have fun, don't become obsesed with 10 rounds in the same hole!!! it aint gona happen at 600 yards :)
 
Here is an idea that will save you time, money and frustration:

1. Make contact here with someone who shoots registered matches at the nearest range.

2. Meet them at a match and just watch. Ask questions of your host. Who are the good shooters? What is it that they're shooting. What are all those lawn decorarations out on the range? What game are they shooting? Are other games shot here as well?

3. Make note of what the good shooters using. Also make note of what people are not using.

4. After the match is over, talk to people, tell them what you're doing. Most shooters are very, very eager to help others take up their addiction.

If you’re interested in Long Range Benchrest, Byers, CO has one of the best 1000yd ranges in the US.

They shoot IBS 1000 yd matches, you don’t need to be a member to shoot the matches there and you don’t need to be a member if you just want to come and observe.
For some reason the 2010 match dates aren’t on the website but here they are in case you want to check it out.

June 12&13 this is the Colorado State Championship but will not be an IBS match. I believe it will be shot using NBRSA rules but will not be an NBRSA registered match either.

Come on out and see if it catches your interest.
1000 yards looks like a long way out there but it is a lot easier than it looks.

The Savage 308 will be fine to get you started you will probably want to get a 20 to 25 minute scope base. Evolution Gun Works (EGW) seems to be the least expensive. You will probably want to upgrade your scope too but you can try it.

go to the IBS site find the results pages and check the equipement list the guys have every disipine on there and results talk heaps more than newbies trying to impress.
