What all is involved in truing a custom action and is it beneficial or should a custom action require any truing work? Or is it a matter of double checking?

The top custom receivers of today are manufactured in high precision cnc machines with cutting edge technology and with state of the art programming. If you’re capable of truing a receiver in manual lathe you should be able to check any custom you wish to. With any one of the top receiver manufacturers of today, I doubt the need to “True” or “Blueprint” would be there.

I've seen a few of the older custom actions which could certainly have benefitted from truing. Some Shilen DGA actions were horrid. Today's custom benchrest actions are as good as they are going to get. Regards, Bill

Depends upon your intentions.

If your custom action is to be used for the highest level of accuracy competition, and you have the means and capability, then of course check every important accuracy feature involving the action.

Chances are that you will just be confirming that the action is made to competitive standards, but then again, you may just come across something that could be tightened up. This way you know you will be going to the firing line with everything double checked and nothing left to chance.......Don

There is still one of the custom actions that has problems in the tenon thread area of the action. Many gunsmiths that work with that action remove the taper in the thread before fitting the first barrel.

Jerry, if we're thinking of the same action, that isn't a problem, but an effort to get more than three or so threads to do most of the work. But as I remember, since so many people misunderstood & complained, he stopped using a tapered thread.

Designs

As far as all surfaces being true and straight with each other, Custom Actions are about as good as you can get.

Rumor has it that there is at least one major custom that has a few design flaws, mainly in the firing pin-shroud department.

I say this because there are some very well known shooters who have spent considerable time 'fixing" some of these problems.

The next time you look at an equipment list and notice that a certain action seems to dominate the top spots, also notice that the same action just might dominate the bottom as well.

Hang around Benchrest long enough, you will learn that there are shooters who spend considerable effort into "improving" what many feel needs no improvement. Sounds a little insane, but doing what we do, 9Competitive Benchrest), seems a little insane to 98 percent of the shooting world anyway.........jackie
