wonder if i can get some pros an cons on swapping out a stock remington 700 trigger.. i'm looking at basix, shilen an jewell .. i'd be using it for bench an practice .. is there really a difference between the three or is just cost that makes them attractive.. i'd like to finish off the wildcat i had built.. an now the last thing is the trigger [is there ever a last thing.. lol] an advise would be helpful.. thanks

If your rifle is NOT to be used in competition then I recommend a Shilen Standard model. It's the best bang for the buck. For competition a 2oz Shilen is just the ticket.

I second that motion

I have a number of them and have had them for a few years; never a hint of a failure or problem one, unlike the BEST trigger out there. I, to date have seen 11 of them fail during matches and I'm sure I haven't seen all the failures that occured while I was at matches.

I on the other hand prefer what my friend Pete calls the "Best Trigger" the Jewel, none of the 7 I own have ever failed however when a case fails and metal or powder gets inside and jams the they sometimes do not reset. Cleaning the foreign object from the sear is all thats required.

anything can "fail" if not maintained/dumped full of powder/allowed to catch a buildup of brass,,,,, for a varmit/hunting gun there a several that will give great preformance,,,,,,,,,BUT for benchrest your best bet is the jewell, hands down

the wind is my friend,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

as a pistol an rifle shooter/hunter for many years i appreciate a good trigger.. as i get older an hunt less i've take more to the bench with a few heavy barreled remingtons.. recently had a chance to shoot a match at VHA in Pa. an will be going back in Sept. for the woodchuck shoot.. as mentioned i had a wildcat built last year an have it shooting pretty good but it lacks that important last item the trigger.. with all the replies you've all made the one thing i noticed is no complaints on any of the makers which leads me to believe i could get by with a less expensive model trigger at least it will be better then 3 1/2#'s +/- i've gotten the stock rem to.. i guess if it doesn't work out to my liking i could put it an one of my others an go for the jewell next time around..
thanks for the comments... although it still open for discussion if you like to ..

McGhee,
I don't think anybody mentioned the rifle basics trigger. I don't think that they are in the same class as the Jewell or Shilen.

As I have said before - -

We report, you decide. Most Of the Jewells I have seen fail have failed, exept for one, was because one of the internal levers broke. As I recall, the end of the lever breaks off, falls out of the trigger and when one first looks inside, it is tough to see why the trigger no longer triggs. The other failed because one of the holes through one of the levers was bored crooked and the lever rubbed the case so hard it wore a big grove in the case. Eventually, it ceased to function.I don't think it had anything to do with powder getting inside them.

I am curious though, Why would anyone say that one particular brand of anything wins Hans Down when there are other comperable products that others are having great results with? Got to make one wonder how open their mind is. I have a couple of rifles with jewells on them. I like them ok but I don't see that they function one bit different than any of the Shilens I either have now or have had in the past.
