Gordon ...

Thanks, Art-- the action (but not the whole rifle) is scheduled to go there end of May for a time/true/Evolution trigger.

What exactly did he work on that helped you out so much? I might want to have him do more than what I had planned if you recommend additional stuff.

First thing I did was replace the Accutrigger with a Rifle Basix Sav-2 myself. Fred initially chambered a Douglas barrel in a .223 Remington and then trued and timed the action and added a competition recoil lug. This is the one I shot the .084" five shot group with. We replaced the original stock with one of his pillar bedded long range benchrest stocks. Eventually, we replaced the Douglas with a 24" Krieger Bull barrel chambered for the 6mm Beggs in a 1-14 twist and converted the 223 bolt head to a PPC head. He did a fine job each time. That's about it.

THANKS!! for that information. I have a Shilen barrel with zero taper. On his list for time/true/trigger. I'll keep the Krieger in mind. I had considered the Sav-2, but decided to let him do all of it.

Have you had the firing pin bushed?
Do you know what firing pin protrusion he set it to (I went to .045 or so after some pierced primers)?
If your firing pin is not bushed, do you have problems with excessive cratering at higher powder charges? (I can't go above 28 grains H322 without getting impressive cratering, molding down alongside the firing pin in the gap between the pin and the bolt -- but I have switched to CCI BR primers and haven't repeated the test yet.)

P.S. This is just a recommendation: Send Fred the whole rifle [stock included] and let him evaluate everything as a complete unit. I've seen separate parts that were individually perfect but did not integrate well. He's a great integrator.

Yes, I had the firing pin bushed by http://www.gretanrifles.com/prices.asp. :)

Docsleepy,
I admire your duct tape work. In a world that has become increasingly buy it, it is good to see someone do something for himself. As to stock finish, most use stock tape for the areas where the bags make contact. Again, I encourage you to do your own work. You won't be perfect, and you will make mistakes, but you will learn a lot, and when something works better, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you did it yourself.
