You will not see too many in the 100-200 yard Benchrest Game because of the weight, and the non 1/2inch dovetail mount, which has just about become universal in that game.

You made the statement that aluminum was stiffer than steel. What would give you that idea?. That term "stiff" is not used much when comparing metals, other than barrel contours.

If weight is of no concern, go with the steel. They are both stronger, and "stiffer"........jackie
 
I have a few sets of their HRT rings in steel, nicely made, wish they made a lower 30mm model. I like them, don't know whar else to say about them.

Somebody hasn't read their Machinery's Handbook in a while. Most of the rings and bases for the BR game are made out of Aluminum for a vary good reason and it is not just because of weight. Aluminum is stronger than steel, this should not come as a surprise to many, especially a metal trades craftsman for this application. :D
 
I guess the word "stiffer" was a poor choice on my part. Although the ultimate yield strength would be lower for the aluminum it is indeed more rigid than steel. Hence you can't make springs from it like you can steel. So the answer regarding the best ring material is...?
