Threading Stops:

Got my copy of the 1943 edition of South Bend's Running a Lathe the other day and saw a passage on "Using a Threading Stop" in the index. I have also seen then on Ebay for sale. I had never heard of them before seeing them on Ebay and now reading about their use in the South Bend book. Do any of you folks use them when threading?

My understanding of a threading stop is to return the cross feed back to the same place each time, then you advance the compound to cut the thread. Maybe some lathes didn't have a graduated dial on the cross feed? Don't know, but just turning back to the same place each time isn't a big deal for me.

It isn't a stop to thread to a shoulder.

although one is made to stop at shoulder.... a guy on this site used to advertise.... believe he was a Texan...

I have one that came with my South Bend 9A, I have not used it with this lathe, but have on a display lathe at our club. This lathe has some slop in the crossfeed screw, so using it allows you to get the crosslide back to the same place each time, even if the dial dosent line up.
