Thread measuring wires

I need to get a set of thread measuring wires but don't see any tolerances listed.

The only ones I've seen used are the Pee Dee set but have also found sets by Enco, SPI and B&S.

Does anybody know which of these sets are adequate for measuring rifle barrel threads ?

Would appreciate any comments.

For measuring 18 TPI, you can use 0.032" (1/32) drill bit shanks. The over-the-wires reading is 1.0715" +/-0.002".

You can duplicate any existing thread of the correct size by using wires (or drill bit shanks) that will clear the thread crests by using the 3-wire method and duplicating the measured value of the specimen.

Machinery's Handbook has more details, like calculating your own wire size, etc.

thread wires

Thread wires are certainly the most accurate method of determining the true pitch diameter of a thread, but they are a pain to use.

While many journeyman machinist look down on them, I like the little thread measuring triangles. Once you learn to use them, you can duplicate any thread to the nearest .0005. They are much more user friendly than wires, and one set will do just about any thread you will ever cut.

All of the big tool houses sell them. Just my opinion........jackie
