This is why they sell Liability insurance

The range I was a member of in Seattle got complaints from homeowners living on top of a fairly good sized hill covered with trees that was the backstop. The range had installed overhead safety baffles ahead of the firing line which mean that for anyone to fire "out of safety" they'd have to have been in front of those baffles. When this was pointed out to the disgruntled homeowners, they quietly tucked their tails between their legs and slunk away. Ranges and range owners have to be VERY careful because they can and will be blamed for any stray bullets that might cause injury to someone or their property, whether or not they're at fault.

The people who complained about bullet holes in their homes also complained that stray arrows from the club's archery ranges were striking their homes. Those arrows would have had to travel well over half a mile to do that which further weakened their already shaky case. A lot of people don't like guns, shooting, or anything associated with them and will do whatever they can to stop shooting and gun ownership.
