the purdiest shooting bench?

I'm waiting for a stone or brick mason to come on ;) This bench drives them batty. As I said, this was our first one...... we just carved the lines into the facing material using crude scraping tools and no pattern. You'll notice a lot of impossible shapes in the "stones"!!

LOL

It's the first three holier I've seen since we got running water back on the farm in the 1950's. I can almost hear the complaints of doubling now. :D

Hovis, no this one does not vibrate, (see post above) We've been using it for 5yrs. For your own benches I strongly recommend isolating the bench from the walking slab. To do this you must form and pour the bench first and then pour your walking slab around it keeping it from bonding to the bench. This applies if you're pouring a "light" setup. The one in the pic is "medium" weight and it's set on compacted gravel, SERIOUSLY compacted gravel. If you're doing one like this and you set it on a subgrade which has been compacted with something like a walk-around plate compacter it WILL MOVE! If you set it on 12" or more of contained ConAg that's been hammered in with a jumping jack you'll probably be OK depending on your area.

Some of the "heavy" benches we've done, (one of them is in the web gallery, the one with the 6" thick top) are extremely stable. I shot for years off of the one in the gallery and a person could dance on the table while another was shooting. (We didn't do this a LOT, but you know...fundraisers and after-hours stuff)

Thanks AL,

again....very nice.

Al ...

Yes very nice looking benches, not my choice of what I like in a shooting bench but there is no question they are purty !

It's unique but I have to agree with Dick. Just call me old fashion or a traditionalist but I prefer Mickey Coleman's style and good separation between benches. I can't image sitting that close to someone with an "Elephant Gun" and a muzzel brake. It wouldn't be much fun. Art

Agreed, :) No argument here!

This is exactly what my range house is set up for, individual benches. The only difference is that mine are set up to be movable because my range house is also a schoolroom for out Hunter Ed classes. When/If I set up for competitive shooting here it'll all be outside the rangehouse on an open covered slab. I've got 130ft wide to work with.

BTW...... you see that dunnage on the ground at the end of the unfinished bench?? That stuff is for the muzzlebrake guys! That whole stack was set up for a guy who was shooting a .50 BMG at the lefternmost position. AR-10 with a clamshell. He slid the stack.....really. A McBro's with a clamshell is almost as bad but the longer barrel helps.

The last couple Sundays it's been used for pistol shooting. My 4-Boy and his friends hunker up into those cutouts and blast away at spinners and dueling trees.......lotsa'fun. We ask that all handguns be laid on rugs until commence fire and this style bench accommodates this sort of shooting safely and well.

Al, I really LIKE....

it, if that's your FIRST, another two, three; hey! you'll probably be on "Inside Edition" (or at least "TMZ") Seriously, very creative, not what one would "expect" to find, I like the outside the box approach.

Hovis Bench

Just wondering because I am getting ready to pour benches this fall or spring and man, that sure is cool what you have done.

Hey Hovis,
You gonna let me and the HFV come shoot of'n your bench? I'd hate to down there and spank you with your own gun(well MINE now):D

Possum,
I got a bench especially for you....hope you don't get sea sick...

Com'in up on my range and beating me with my old gun...no way...I can stack that deck (cause I'd probably have to)...:D :D

Hope all is well,

Hovis

That's good Jackie. They are darn purty benches. Have you shot off them yet al ? If you have, does anyone to your left or right get vibrations that are unusual. I shot with a guy one time at a range that had two concret benches that were poured with one top. Seemed very difficult to shoot off of because of vibrations from each other. They were not like yours (how they are made). Just wondering because I am getting ready to pour benches this fall or spring and man, that sure is cool what you have done.

If it were me, I'd have a shooter slot on each end, offset of course (by 18"). You loose to many shooters if the shooter slots are in line facing each other.
I call it politician benchrest.

That's funny...

I was thinking...Could have one berm and then come back 100yds and set some benches and then come back to 200yds and set some benches...shoot 100 & 200 at the same time...rotation would be between 100 and 200 after every match....after ten groups...last one sitting is agg winner...:D :D

Wouldn't do a lot for club membership though...:p :p

I'm jealous...

....when can you come down & duplicate??

We could use one of those instead of the warped picnic table at the ranch:)

A bench like this is a wonderful thing in a backyard or small private range . Lots of room for spreading out all your shooting, reloading, and testing items. It is just not what I would prefer when shooting an actual match.

I am envious, I wish I had it in my backyard, actually I would be happy with an old rickety wooden bench in my back yard if it had even a 100 yd range in front of it.

Hey Hovis,
Me and the HFV have decided to put off coming to shoot at your place until you get some of your "issues" resolved:eek::)
