The NBRSA Nationals, A View From The "Cheap Seats"

Just got back from the Nationals, everything I have is for sale.:D

Why??. Because it is time to re-group, (pun intended).

I brought back a brand new action installed in a brand new stock, it's time to get into the 21st Century.

I had a great time, it was a real pleasure witnessing some of the most awesome shooting ever. It is simply mind boggling to see what a well tuned Benchrest Rifle will do in the hands of a competent shooter.

Records certainly fell, but the neatest thing to witness all week was the world record 200 yard group fired by Tom Libby. You could not have written a script any better.

Don Geraci had shot a .123 in the first match. It was dead centered in the moth ball, a real thing of beauty.

So, what does Libby do. He shoots a .093!!!!!! dead in the middle of the moth ball as well. This thing looked like someone indicated the moth ball in a milling machine and then bored a tiny .336 hole dead in the middle. Talk about odds. Two groups that small shot at 200 yards, dead center.

At least I know what I will be doing this Winter. Learning how to shoot Benchrest, all over again.

I look at it this way. When you get beat this bad, you can either throw your hands in the air and give up, or be inspired by the excellence of others and reach for higher goals............jackie
 
With all Mr. Libby's high jinks and costumes, I think some folks may not figure Tom to be a serious benchrest competitor. Well nothing could be futher from the truth. When they call shooters to the line, Tom Libby should not be taken lightly.

At Visalia last month Tom shot very well - especially at 200. While I was not expecting a .093, I was not surprised to see Tom do well against the very best on the planet.

The clown prince of BR can shoot very small :D

If I was Libby, (which I AIN'T!) that last shot woulda' probably give me an infarction.......

Ok

I have never competed with a Ejector Rifle. I have always "hunted and pecked" in our Region, and in other certain places, this has served me well.

But, there are times when you have to be able to shoot fast. Particuarilly in conditions that you simply cannot read the conditions with enough precision to shoot small. Wait on a let-up, and get em down range.

So, I had the opportunity to buy a brand new Chrome Moly Bat, (Two Lug), Left Port-Right Eject, installed in a brand new Bob Scarborough Stock. This was a deal I could not pass up, knowing how desireable these two items are, and the waiting period to aquire them.

Yes, I am going to have to re-learn shooting. I watch Gene Bukys shoot, (no high tech stuff, he's a bag squeezer), and that might be the route I take. He is VERY good at waiting untill the opportune moment, and letting the brass fly. Or, go the other direction, the Farley Front rest and free recoil. But regardless, I have got to get into the rythm of staying on the Rifle, cycling the bolt quickly, and getting shots down range in a favorable condition.

Sure, there are times when "hunting and pecking" serves well, but you have to have the skill and ability to "run and gun" when the conditions call for that type of shooting.

I told my Wife that I was going to set a bench up in our living room, so I could practice bench technique, and cycling the Rifle. I figure she has to make a few sacrifices as well. Might be a good time to review the Community Property Laws in Texas.:D

I am excited about the new Action and Stock. I have all Winter to get with the program. It will be fun. Or, at least, it should be........jackie

Jackie, something to consider. If you don't already have a video camera, and you probably already have one, if not, then get one. Digital or VHS. Film your practice then study your movements.

Porobably not. The reason I was able to get away the last two times was Hurricanes prevented me from attending the Nationals.

I just about have to take a week off to get over to Rachels Glenn and shoot. As much as I would like to be there, I doubt I can make it this year......jackie

Gary Walters, Gene Bukys, John Jones, and Vic Smith might show.

Most who know me are aware of my business situation. I am part of a familly corporation. Any day I am away from my shop, it cost me. My grown kids can only afford for me to be away from work for so long.:D..........jackie
 
We've got at least five and maybe as many as eight shooters from Birmingham going including two or three new shooters. It would be great to see a good turnout at Rachel's Glen.

Jackie: Gonna miss you. I sure Mickey will too. As I remember he "Juggled" his date so you could attend. Maybe it will work out with the lottery and you can come! Jim casey

He Juggled it last year, the Nationals were in October, just two weeks after his match. We said we could get five shooters over, he graciously accommadoted us by moving the date. We showed up.

It's a different situation this year. There is no place I would rather be than Rachels Glenn in October. But these long trips are expensive, plus the loss in wage due to time away from the business.

It sucks when life's responsibilities get in the way of having fun ........jackie
 
Why I was wondering about the Texas shooters....I think Butch still has a container in Tennesse he needs to get to Texas. Maybe Butch will see this and if he needs it brought down to the texas guys, I might be able to do it. Still not positive I will be there as I found out the Mississipi Valley Regionals are the same weekend in St. Louis which is much closer for me. Have to see what the wife wants to do.

Steve, It would be most helpful if the new shooters would go online and join the NBRSA before they get here. It's hectic during registration, at best, and to have to handle their NBRSA registration/dues is just something that could be prevented. Please ask them to make sure they have already joined when they get here. Many thanks.

Please don't give it another thought. We love to see you guys but completely understand when the 'the oxen is in the ditch'. We will miss being with you, though. Take care.

By the way, the people who are serving lunches at the shoots now can be here on Friday if it will help you guys. Let me know if y'all want them here with some lunch. I have nothing to do with the food now. It's done by outside vendors.
