As usual, we shoot the third Sunday of nearly every month. Airgun benchrest 9-12 am, general debating sessions and potuck lunch after the match, 12-5 pm.

Equipment rules: Airguns only, .22 cal or under, no other restrictions if its safe.

Shooter rules: Respect the firing line and general range safety practices, don't recharge your gun during a relay, no whining.

We shoot for group, unlimited sighters, three shot groups, ten groups per target, three targets per match. (Again, its fifty yards)

New Range

Larry,
Wishing you well with your first match at your new range this week end.
Would love to see some pictures of the new range.

Paul

Paul,

Thanks Paul,

Me an Rich Wood tried it out last week in a little informal shoot, just to see how it went. Turned out near exact apposite of what we had suspected ... winds were a little LESS than up the hill where we had been shooting, but we soon saw they could, and did, switch directions much more quickly!

Anyhow, its going to be a lot of fun, and we are looking forward to it. A bonus is anytime we want to shoot, we can now do it without worrying about cleaning up the garage to make room. Me an Rich rolled my old Baja van down next to the benches to use as a storage shed, so we can keep the targets, backers, stools, flags, and whatever else we need ready to hand, so we can shoot in a few minutes whenever we like.

Of course I STILL have a heavy bench in the garage too, for more informal shooting, plus we have the 51 yard underground tunnel for testing setups out.

50yds Temecula AGBR

LD Good luck on Your new Range 50yds. Can You list what Guns You Guys use and cal. ThankYou very much. 21grains

Sporters...and Space guns...lol....

I use this: Dominator .22..30 FPE on JSB 15.8 GR..trigger a bit harsh at 2.5 LBS...but fun none the less...doping wind is key..

Guns we use in Temecula

There have been a mix of guns, mostly precharged, but a couple springers have been used also. Shooters are gravitating towards heavier pellets and power settings of between 15-35fpe, such as Cyclone, Daystate MKIII, and USFT's.

Premiers for .177 and JSB for .22 and 5mm are good fodder so far.

The Cyclone has top score right now, but the USFT is also a runner.

I would say flag design and reading skills are as important as gun model

Larry,

I'd be interested in seeing what your targets look like. I kind of like your format of shooting 10 3-shot groups / target at 50Y as that could tell a lot. And, as a tie-breaker you could have them shoot 3 5-Shot or 10-shot groups, then measure for best.

Maybe this will become the Airgun Standard for the future. I know it would make it a whole lot easier for us up on Pinnacle Mtn. if we could just leave the stands out at 50Y after finishing with an IR 50/50 match, then switching over to Airguns rather than having to move everything, including flags, in for 25Y.

Good luck, and looking forward to reading more.

Picture of our targets

I really don't know how to post pics here, but I'll try to get Rich to post one after we shoot this Sunday.

As to ties, well, thats part of the neat thing with the game we play as its eveolved ... theres nearly no chance of a tie, since we are using the grand aggregate of the thirty individual groups eaxh hooter makes in a match to determine the winners. So far at least, the spreads have been such there hasnt been any really close aggregates in a match.

The Target..

This is target LD was refering to. NRA A36...made by Alco Target Co.

Due to crosswinds at his old 50 yard range, some would rotate target clockwise to provide more leeway for sighters...lol..

I'll get a pic of an actual target at our match Sunday so you can see groups that guys get in LD's windy location from new range..and pic of rifles...

Thanks for the target info. Guess I'll be running down to my local target supply shop before our season gets started, and maybe even before our next Indoor match in 2 weeks.

David,
I have A36 targets that is what the rifle team uses at 50 feet. I shot some at 50 yards 75 and 100 yards when I tested the target stands several weeks ago.
My problem I couldn't see the holes in the black! I only had a 6-24 power. The ones in the white no problem. Will have to see if a T36 picks up the ones in the black. I lost count on several targets with some having 2 shots and others having 4.

Larry I saw the pictures of your new range on your forum. Looks Great!
I need your mailing address.

A-36 target

I soetimes have trouble seeing the holes when using .177 cal, but with .22 its not a prob. I have mostly been using a fix power 24X leupold scope.

I'll email in a bit.

Larry,
Great looking range!

Crazyhorse,
Great pictures and thanks for the target pictures also.

Larry, I have never shot for group. I take it you measure outside to outside from the two farthest holes. Then do you subtract the pellet diam?

Looks like we will shoot it next month when we are outdoors.

Paul

Paul,

Yes,

We measure outside to outside (its a little subjective, but not too bad once you get the hang of it. Once we measure all the groups on each target paper, we total em up. When all the shooter's targets are fired and measured, we total em, then divide by the total groups shot, and subtract one caliber to arrive at the aggregate c.t.c.

WE don't shoot for score, so we needn't hit the ten ring, BUT, since we don't want confusion on which shot belongs to which group, we insist each group be "anchored" with at least one shot touching the black of a bull. Failure to anchor, firing not enough or too many shots results in a penalty of an inch per infraction added to that particular group. Generally, when I fire the first shot, I'm just trying to hit black ... then I try to hit the first shot with the other two to get a good group. Sometimes the wind makes those two things darned hard!

Yesterday, none of us was able to average the "sub m.o.a." we like to see, but I'm sure as we get acclimated, it will come.

Here are the results of our Feb. 2010 match

The weather held off with respect to rain, though it was a bit cold and pretty windy today. Six of us braved the weather to try our skills and luck on the fifty yard line today, firing three targets each, with thirty record shots per target, to see how we could do with airguns at long range under competition conditions.

Afterward, we went up the hill and had a nice bar-b-cue with burgers and sausages, salad, drinks, chips, etc. and told stories for a couple hours. Great fun all.

Here are the overall results:

Shooter gun score (thirty three-shot groups, ctc average)

Larry Durham USFT .61" .22 cal

Roger Lovett USFT .63" (.22 cal)

Matt Saenz Cyclone .69" .22 cal

Tim McMurray USFT .86" .22 cal

Rich Wood Walther .87" .22 cal

Roger Lovett USFT .95" .177 cal

Larry Pirrone TX200 1.32" .177 , springer

I felt the scores were remarkably tight, given the conditions, and it was nip and tuck til the last targets were fired and measured.

fifty yd feb.21

Nice looking range , it looks like Roger is closing in. it's hard to tell but are all the benches concrete ? and is it level to the targets ? looks like no wind there.:D

Benches are level to ground they sit on and are pre-stressed concrete...except one bench :D .......target frame is a bit lower...but not exceeding 20 degrees...wind is always there at 3-7 mph...and switching left/right or into a headwind approx 9 mph.....the difficulty factor is at least a 9 out of 10...of course,at 25 yards vice 50 yards is a whole different ball game regarding wind values...you guys should try out 50 yards in San Diego...you have the room to do it...:D

Feb,21 match

your right just when someone cleans that targets we have now , we will check in to that. it looks like L.D.'S new range it the hot ticket huh ? in the mean time maybe you guys could try shooting BR-50 or the AGBR @ 25 yds . just to see how that range really works.. see ya !! good shooting. H.B.:D

Yup, nice range indeed! And it looks like the scenery out there could really be something, at least to one of us New Englanders.

Good luck with what you're doing, and, as I said before, you may have something there. I know I can't wait to give it a try next month at Paul's range.
