technique for moving from column 1 to column 2 in score shooting

I wrote down all my scores based on target numbers on a spreadsheet and it showed a bad trend. Targets 1,2,3 (left side) were pretty good - mostly 10's a few 9's. However, 4,5 (right side) were not so pretty. 8's, 9's & slop in a few 10's. Is there a correct technique for moving from column 1 to column 2? As of now, I just nudge my rear bag to the left which puts my point of aim to the right. Should I be using my left/right dial on the front rest instead? I don't know if it matters or not - but I shoot down column 1 then move over and shoot down column 2. Thanks in advance for any advice.

What rear bag do you have ? I had some fluke shots on target 4 when I first started it took a few weeks for me to figure out that it was just on that one target. I used to shoot them in numerical order although when I started out I didn't realize they were numbered :p

It was obvious I was making a mistake with the rear bag [ a mushy Caldwell ]. I upgraded to a hard bottom bag and then later a stiff bag on a donut.

The best upgrade was a joystick rest top. I do think it is better to shoot from bottom to top, ie always moving up. If I overcorrect high I back up below the POA and then come back up to it. I now shoot 1 2 3 5 4.

I did get a tip at the last match. Target 1 is the tie breaker, shoot it later when you have a better chance of getting an X.

Is there a correct technique for moving from column 1 to column 2? Stanley

Work backwards ... column 2 then 1. Shoot target 5, 4, 3, 2, and then 1. Reason: Ties are broken beginning at one and usually, you've figured out the conditions by then, and are shooting better then when started. I've found that to be the case 95 to 98% of the time. Use your sighter, as often as needed, to confirm conditions. I nudge my bag to the right to move to column 1 then set my crosshairs where I want them on each target depending on conditions. I make minute changes for wind with the windage adjustment. Any elevation adjustments with a speed screw. Since I shoot free recoil I get completely off the gun except for my thumb and index finger which I squeeze together ... my index finger is on the trigger and my thumb behind the trigger guard. I watch my flags with my head up and squeeze off the round in the condition I've decided to shoot in. Take your time. You've got 7 minutes for 5 targets. How long is 7 minutes ??? Sit and watch a clock for 7 minutes. It's a long time. Concentrate on each shot. We all shoot a little different. I hope this gives you some ideas. Art

If you are shooting 8's, then figuring out which targets to shoot, in what sequence, might not be your problem.:D
Seriously, I just toss a clearing round on the sighter, confirm my hold, and go straight up. When I move to the left of the target, I slide the rifle back and forth in the bags a couple of times to insure everything is seated. Then go straight down, finishing with number #1.
Of course, it really gets hectic when shooting in crappy conditions and you are forced to go back and forth from record bulls to the sighter.
Personally, I think all of this bag handling stuff is overated. If the Rifle is working, none of that seems to matter that much........jackie

Thank you

Thank you for all your replies. CRB, I have a delux protektor(sp) bag - if I remember right it is bag #41. It does have a hard bottom to it. I will try your suggestions. Thanks again, and have a great season.
