Team USA Reminder

Another reminder.

We have been asked that any shooter that can to bring any extra air tanks, either SCBA or SCUBA, to do so. If they are pressurized, please ensure that they are properly secured and handled. Extra tanks will be helpful in case there is no compressor at the club or compressor malfunction.

There are SCUBA shops in the area, http://www.lowcountrydiving.com/
http://www.charlestonscuba.com/index.php/page/home

It might be wise to check with them on any requirements they require to fill a tank and if they can fill to 4500 psi.

LD and I are driving, and we will bring a couple full tanks... we can help out a little.

This is probably a stupid question but would an air compressor like you buy at Sears or Home Depot for inflating tires work?
Since it will be very humid is moisture a consideration?

I'll join you Doug possibly with a stupid answer as i am no expert but i am 95% sure when we went to a tournament in Melbourne last year the club had exactly what you have described but it was big compressor not a small camping type one.

Doug,

Not a stupid question, but the answer is they will not work. One, not enough pressure, 2nd, contaminated air which will result in damaged rifle. You need a compressor that can deliver pure and absolute dry air for fill. High pressure compressors with superb filtration aren't cheap.

Regards,
Joe

Bill,

Its a definite likelyhood the compressor you saw had extra stages that allowed the air to be compressed more. The regular shop type, no matter how large, with few exceptions, rarely deliver more than 8 to 12 bar, while the tanks most folks at the match will need to use to fill thier airguns deiver 200-300 bar.

Steve,

As I had told you before, I will be bringing a freshly filled 4500psi tank plus fittings for both the new style Air Arms and a Foster that I think is the same as the old style Air Arms (the one AZ uses) and will be more than happy to share so long as I'm left with enough air to fire my own last shot.

It is unlikely there will be a compressor at the range unless Team USA brings one?
It is doubtful that shooters will want to spend a couple hours driving around trying to get a tank filled during the match.
It looks like there could be 40 to 50 people shooting in the Air Rifle matches.

Another Dumb Question:
How much ‘Air’ would be needed for two days of practice & and competition?
(i.e. 4500 PSI Tanks)

Air Concerns

I know of no one on Team USA that is bringing a compressor. The number of fills from a SCUBA or SCBA tank depends on your tank and your air rifle. Air rifles that need to be filled to 2900 PSI and shoot at 20 FPE, obviously get fewer fills from a given tank than an air rifle that only needs to be filled to 1500 psi.

First issue, this is the first World Championships held here and certainly the largest gathering of air rifle benchrest shooters in this country. Most everyone is new at this and moving quickly along the learning curve. What is required for air rifle shooters and how much will be something the host club, while experienced in rimfire benchrest matches, may have some challenges with.

Second issue, Team USA members will also be traveling by some means and need to ensure their own requirements for ammo and air are taken care of, first. Their travel will be far less than the international shooters but no less stressful. Our community is very giving and they have proven a willingness to share whenever they can.

An Air Idea?

Please Remember I’m a Dumb Rimfire shooter!!
Lets look at one competitor coming from South Africa with his Air Rifles and arrives the day of the LV match. He is hoping that after the match he can do a little practice and then go back to the hotel with the wife and kids & not worry about AIR for the HV match. Both of his Air Rifles need to be flied to the max for both matches/targets and maybe a couple of practice targets. (2900 PSI and shoot at 20 FPE)
Can I bring him one 4700PSI Tank and he will be able to go out with the wife and kids for dinner or have to drive around for hours looking for AIR???

OK Another Stupid Question but I have no Idea!

Doug,

I haven't counted the fills on one 4500psi tank, for my 12 and 20fpe rifles, my guess would be 20 plus fills for my 20fpe rifle, with the 12fpe it would be more fills. So yes he would enjoy dinner with his family without worry.

Regards,
Joe

Rule K.6 states the host country must supply air for fills to 300 bar at the event.

Thats good to know Joe, i thought that was the case and i guess for those of us not bringing family we can change it to enjoy clubs and bars ;)

It's a nice thought to say how we will all be bringing along full tanks of air and how we will be willing to share our air with our fellow shooters. But there's a catch.

What we need to keep in mind is that with our friends flying in from afar we are not talking about just topping off their tanks, we are talking about doing an initial fill starting from ZERO PSI, then topping them off after that. That initial fill is where the killer will be in determining how much air it will take to get us through two days of shooting, and why we need access to a compressor.

Even if every U.S. shooter brought a full 88 cu. ft. tank filled to 4500psi and committed to sharing it with just one other competitor, meaning only ±30 shooters would be covered, that initial fill is going to blow off enough air so we would be lucky to have enough left to carry us both through to the finish of the second day, especially
when including practice (15 to 20 targets). So, what's going to happen to the other 40 or 50 shooters who will be left standing in line?

Just something to think about in the days to come.

Dave

Thanks Dave you have raised some great questions that should be passed on to the “Match Director/US Representative”!
One further thought that should maybe be passed along is that the range power might not be able to handle a large multi stage compressor even if one was found??

Wow I doubt Our "Match Director" has read K6?

Now this could be interesting? or it has already been taken care?
I do know that the 'Host Range' does not know anything about the requirement mentioned in K 6.

K.6 Air Rifle filling station
The hosts must ensure that adequate safe facilities be available at the Range as to enable competitors to fill the air rifles to the required capacity 8.25 Joules or 6 ft lbs 16.27 Joules (12 ft/lbs 20.34 Joule or 15 ft/lb .200 and 300 bar filling facilities must be available at the event.
