have a 6mm br load i want to try but it calls for cci br4 primers.i have cci450 federal 205m & rem 71/2..which of these would be the best to use in lieu of the cci br4

Whichever brand your particular rifle likes. Try them all, and pick the best shooting one.

The Federal primer is going to be closer in degree of "flash" to the BR4 than any of the the others. Also my testing has shown no difference in the BR4 and the 400. In fact the standard CCI gave the best Sd of all I tested. Little or no difference in the Fed 205 and 205M that I can see.

I hear there is a primer shortage over there along with a ammo shortage, is this true?

Martin -- Yes, it's all true. I haven't been able to find small rifle primers of any kind in over three months and there is no prediction when they may become available again. The dealers will not accept back orders. Ammo in many calibers is in short supply and the prices are high. I know of one store that even rations their ammo to customers. I've been able to find .223 Rem ammo in bulk but the prices are high. There seems to be plenty of large rifle and pistol and shotgun primers around. Some areas report gunpowder shortages. There is also a lot of hoarding going on that has affected supplies.

thanks for the replys..what i was really worried about was pressure due to the primer change..i'll back off 10% & work up .5gr at a time

Damn, it will hit us soon, all our primers are imported.

I inquired about BR4s to CCI a while back and also asked what primer was closest to the BR4. They don't know when BR4 will be available and CCI 400 is the same mixture with a thinner cup. Kenny

I've seen that Calhoun "data" before.

Some years ago I read an article in PS (10/1993) by Dick Wright, who certainly knows a thing or two about primers. He titled it "Prime Nonsense" and it would no doubt profit many folks, including Mr. Calhoun to read, or reread it. Hopefully reprints can be had, but failing that you might be able to get the SAAMI drawings pertaining to primers and primer pockets. Once you understand that there are no absolutes in primer dimensions and charges, just like there are none in powder density, you'll understand why you must experiment with primers to find the one that works best for your load, your rifle , your application. and then buy all of that lot you can-- just like bullets...........brass.................
