I am looking for a good spotting scope.Anyone have one

I have looked through a LOT of spotting scopes and for the money the best one has been the Celestron Ultima 80mm. Don't let the price scare you off, it is a GOOD spotitng scope.

:)

i hate to dissagree with you, but my celestron is up for sale. now my reason maybe ignorable in br, but i have to mention it.
at 200 yds i cannot detect 30 cal holes in a black bullseye.
notice i said black bullseye.
if the scope was only used for br type targets, it would be a great scope for the money, but since i shoot more than just br, it is a big issue for me. i lost a 200 yd match because i coule not see where in the black i was hitting...picked up 5 nines...and lost by those 5 points.
having said that, i have the bigger celestron, the 100,22x67x..and ues you can see with it......that is holes in a std br target. and yes i could see holes at 1000 even in the blue.
the 100 is only $310 delivered....need a sturdy mount for it.

maybe springing for the ed glass would help..but it is suppose to be "red" color enhancer.

100mm?

I had a 100mm Celestron and I totally agree, it is not good.

Sent it back and got the 80mm and it is head and shoulders better than the 100mm.

Why? - no idea!

no idea either.
technically the 100 should be able to resolve a given hole better than the 80.
these scopes( and the entire family of scopes from konus out of china) have quality issues. it is the plan that as a brand name is applied to a run of scopes more quality goes in based on the desired effect on the market. i bought the "celestron" named product, knowing it would be cheaper to buy the same model with a konus name.
mine works fine at 100 yds, and good from there out on white background holes. the only mechanical issue was a tripod mount failure after about one yr. they replaced the scope with a new one. i paid the shipping to them and the required $35 fee. lifetime warrantee.

like i said , if i only shot br, or only white background targets, it would be great, and excellent for the money.
but alas, i do shoot black back ground targets, and now must spend 4-5 times as much to see the holes.

Having owned a few of them

I can and will tell you that you only get what you pay for and this is an area where one needs to spend nearly as much on a spotting scope as one does on their rifle. There are some great scopes for around a Grand but that is about the bottom. Sometine at a shoot go to the area where spotting scopes are set up by observers and look through the various scopes there. The good ones are not difficult to find. ED glass adds a lot to being able to see. You will notice that too.

From my observation ( rsisted doing this for a bit BUT: ) and in my opinion, either a Nikon Field Scope with ED glass or a Pentax with ED glass is as good as anyone can do.

ED glass does make a difference but spotting scopes rise or fall on the quality of the eyepiece. Pentax does have an edge in this area, for now.

pete,
again i have limited experience, but
i went to a 1000 match here in co, at byers.
i was there for the whole match, and had my scope up the entire match.
i had no issues seeing holes....they shoot a off white with lite blue center.
summer day.
i do agree one gets what one pays for.....
