Some information taken from the Permian Trophy- 200 Yd Small Group

I'm attaching a spread sheet with the year, names and group size shot from the Permian Trophy - 200 Yard Small Group. This has been the Texas State 200 Yard Small Group Unlimited class traveling trophy for quite awhile. I'm not sure whether it was all the time from when it started. The first person who won it was added to the trophy in 1954. That's a long time. The year before I was born. When you look at the group sizes shot over the years, we may not have come as far as we think we have. I am missing some years, names and group sizes. If anyone has who won the Texas State 200 YD small group for the following years, please let me know and I will add their name and group size to their respective year. 1982, 1983, 1987, 1988, 1989,1993-1996,1998, 2012 and 2013. I'm trying to get a new traveling trophy updated with all the names that are missing.

What a difference the weather can make. Things have slowly moved to smaller groups over the years but it moves so slow it doesn't seem to matter much. Good post Mike!

BTW - Is anybody else having trouble opening this file or is it just me and my old PC. I can save it and then open it but I can't just open it.

Notice that in 1966 that R.C.Hanson shot a .252" 200 yard 10 shot group. Pretty amazing for that time and the equipment that was being used.

I could open it the other day. But I can't now

When I click on the link in the house with a Mac, it doesn't open, but it downloads to a button in the upper right corner of the Safari browser. When I click on the button with the arrow it shows the downloads. I then have to click on the file name from that button and it will open. The file is a pretty late MS Excel version file. I'll check and see if it will open on the PC in my shop. On my iPhone, it opens right up. And, yes, the size of the group that wins it from one year to the next pretty well shows how much benchrest is wind speed driven. However, it seems that anymore there can be some pretty howling winds and some pretty small aggs especially with 5 shot groups. The 10 shot groups maybe not so small when the wind gets faster. You'd think that 10 shot groups would be twice as hard to shoot as a 5 shot group as there are twice as many shots, but I think they are 5 times harder since you have 5 more chances to shoot that shot that makes the group measure larger since it's measured from the 2 widest bullets and aren't actually measuring all 10. When I click on it in Internet Explorer on the PC in the shop, a box opens at the bottom of the screen asking whether I want to open it or download it. I've seen this kind of thing happen before with files uploaded to benchrest.com. Sometimes they will open, sometimes not. Probably has to do with my computer savvy or more likely the lack thereof.

The trend is 0.0073" smaller per year. Pretty cool to see this data and history.

It opened right up now and when I opened it soon after Mike posted it.

That name, Permian, struck a chord with me and so I checked it out. It is a very interesting subject down Odessa way. Why didn't Gene Beggs ever tell us about it?

Francis this is news to me too.

My involvement with benchrest did not begin until around '87-'88 when I began hanging out with the Midland Shooters. It's been quite an experience! :)

Later,

Gene Beggs

Dusty, not with a .598. But, that is how I wound up with it in my possession. Below is a photo of the traveler. As you can see, it's about impossible to add a name plaque to it. Not sure whether traveling trophies are a blessing or a curse. They take up a lot of space for a year, but do guarantee that the recipient will be back next year to get rid of it.
