Small Rifle Firing Pin vs Large Rifle

I ordered a 6.5x47L reamer today and plan on building one with a no turn neck. The receiver I will be using is a Remington 700 (I already have it) but, it has the large rifle firing pin. Since the 6.5x47L uses the small rifle primers would there be any reason why one couldn’t use the standard firing pin assembly in the 700. I can bush the bolt face and turn down the firing pin with no problem, I'm just curious as to your thoughts. Thanks for your reply.

???

I was under the assumption that Remington used the same .078, (or there abouts), firing pin on all of there actions, regardless whether it is chambered for 223, 308, or 338 Ultra Mag.........jackie

Jackie, going off of memory, my firing pin is around .074" in diameter. Isnt the firing pin used in say a PPC or other calibers using the small rifle primers around .0625" in diameter??

Just curious if the larger firing pin would really matter or not. Thanks.

Not on a Remington action. They are all the same, well I'm not sure that any two Remingtons are identical, but I'm pretty sure Jackie is right. A small firing pin will let you get away with higher pressure loads, but I don't think it has any bearing on accuracy IMO.

Does this mean that a small firing pin that has say .002 smaller dia. than the firing pin hole in the bolt can run more pressure than a large firing pin with the same .002 smaller dia. than the hole?

My Panda has a 0.075 pin, normal size Kelbly's supply unless you ask for smaller. At top end loads I get cratering but have not blown a primer ever. I had opportunity to try another bolt with an 0.068 pin diameter and all that happened was the diameter of the crater was smaller, they still cratered just as badly. In fact using CCI BR4's with the 0.075 pin made a bigger difference to the cratering than using the 0.068 pin with Federal 205m's.

With regards to pin size vs large or small rifle primers, they both take the same pin size just like Jackie said, the pin size is just dependant on the action maker. You don't need a small pin for a small primer and a fat pin for a large primer.

If the pin is well fitted in the hole I am not convinced the diameter really matters that much unless you want to run insane pressures with thin cupped primers.
