Shooting Technique

I have been wondering what percentage of shooters shoot all 5 shots in the same condition during the 7 min time period. Just wating for the same condition to come around. Or is it more often that you have to run to the sighter & shoot a different condition? russell m

I believe most people somewhere near 100% prefer to shoot all 5 shots in the same condition. And the better ones (I am not one of this group) shoot a different condition when they have to and hold off accordingly.

This is where the fast shooters sometimes shine. At Riverbend you rarely get a condition to last long enough for a slow shooter to get all 5 shots in one string. Normally he can get 2 or 3 and then wait and maybe his condition comes back or maybe " ONE MINUTE - ONE MINUTE " and he starts having to hit the sighter and hold off.

At our June [ score ] match on the last 100 yd target I busted out a 5x before some were through with their sighters. That was definitely the fastest I have ever put out 5 rounds. The condition had a slight wind velocity change after the 2nd shot but I just held what I thought was right and kept shooting. That is where ultra sensitive windflags pay dividends.

July's match will be a group match and I will be back to feeling lost:eek:

Speaking of the better shooters I once shot next to a famous Hall of Fame shooter from Vermont for an entire weekend at Union County Pennsylvania. This was at least 15 Years ago and I believe at an IBS Nationals match. All day Saturday and two thirds of the way through Sunday I saw this shooter fire many, many sighters and never put a single shot on his record target until the last 20 to 30 seconds every time.

Since he was winning I could not fault his technique but I really wondered if he ever shot before the last 30 seconds so I asked him "if he ever shot before the last 30 seconds ?"

He stated "I shoot as soon as I see something I like and I haven't seen anything I liked all weekend!"

You have seen me shoot, and you know that I am more of a hunter and a pecker than a runner and a gunner. I shoot condition, holding a little one way or the other if the condition is not quite what I want. I have never bought into that thing of banging away as fast as one can when you think the condition is the same.
This serves some very good shooters quite well. It is just not my style. There are times that I will shoot fast if the opportunity arises. But you have shot at some of the ranges in our Region. You know what we have the majority of the time.
One other thing. Regardless of what style of shooting you choose to emmulate, you still have to have a Rifle that is working. All ways remember, it all starts with the Rifle........jackie

Many very famous HOF shooters have one or more version of "...seven minutes to decide what 25 seconds you are going to shoot in......" and then there are others like Jackie who will use the seven minutes, 1 second...one shot at a time. They will all beat us mere mortlas like red-headed step children.

Jackie Yes I have sat & watched you shoot. I know you shoot heads up. & have watched closely. you take your shot. open bolt remove spent case insert new one look in the scope once maybee twice & then you are back to heads up. then boom again. while this is happening I am watching your hands to see if you are making any adjustment. from what I have seen very few if any. I dont know if I am correct or if my observations are wrong. If I am correct you are excellant at picking the same exact condition 5 times. russell m

Jackie You made the comment that you first have to have a rifle that will shoot. I would really appreciate it if you would shoot my gun the next time I am invited back to Tomball using the load I have found? russell m

Yes, I shoot heads up. 95 percent of the time I am not looking through the scope when I let the shot go. I am looking at the conditions, usually the entire field, trying to see what is happenning, and what is getting ready to happen.
I suppose this also tells you that I pay very little attention to mirage.
It is all in what you feel comfortable with. Those that have enjoyed a certain amount of success with one method will say that is the best, those that have enjoyed a certain amount of success with another method will champion it. But, sooner or later, what it comes down to is what you are comfortable with, and what will allow you to shoot at a competitive level.
Next time we are at Tomball together, I will be glad to give you a hand.......jackie

Jackie I understand that I need to find my own shooting style that I have confidence in & stick with it. I am getting there. The only thing that makes me better is trigger time.
