shoes for metal work....

I too, had to learn the hard way about safety toed shoes in the shop. Even minor foot injuries are very painful...

In 1969, doing some minor shop reorganization, I picked up a 4 ft x 4 ft x 1/2" piece of plywood leaning against the wall... What I didn't know was that behind the middle of the piece of plywood was a 4" dia. bar of stainless abt 2 ft long standing on end that the plywood had partially tipped back. As I picked up the plywood and turned away from the wall, the bar tipped forward toppling over and landed across the toes of my right foot. I ended up on crutches for a month waiting for a broken big toe to mend... Talk about painful, they can't cast a broken big toe, you simply stay off the foot and it mends on its own. And naturally, it finds everything imaginable to contact during the mending process as using crutches with one foot suspended has to be the most awkward thing to attempt...

Moral is, use safety toed footwear in the shop, its far better than suffering a painful foot injury which doesn't take much...

Happy shooting,
Mitch & Shadow...

I love the idea of mats or wooden slats BUT..... my situation is a little different. This is my home shop. I've got engine hoists and painting stands and assembly rollarounds. My welders are on rollarounds, toolboxes and worktables. I've even got a 500lb rollaround with a small mill/lathe on it. We tend to customize the work area for a given project.......Where I'm going is, I keep the floor free of things like mats because of the rolling blockage and also tripping hazard.

Having somebody get tangled in the big drillpress trying to pass......

So for now, we walk on chips. The REAL answer would be a bigger shop!!

:D

I'm torn between steel toes and not, both have advantages.

But I'm glad to know that Vibram is the way to go. Gives me a place to start.

Don't look at as $500.00 out the window. They are an investment in good foot health. They can be re-soled when the soles wear out. You can have boots so comfortable, you'll wear them to bed. I support Made In America and Red Wing now makes only one style in America.

Hey FffbBbRansSsSsCcissSSSSSS!!!!!!! Good to hear Ol' Son!!!

I didn't say I don't own a pair, I do. :)

And you can sleep in them. loggers and firecrews do it allatime....... but I'm a pussy, a concrete guy, I can't hang with the outdoorsy types. I gener'ly take my boots off at night and I can still pee in my barefeet. To maintain my foot health I wear 10.00 rubber boots made in China, two sizes too big......your feet HAVE to stay healthy in these or you're reduced to walking on stumps. It's a "kill or cure" pholosophy, weeds out the problem feet. I've got callouses on top of my feet. :D

White's are WEIRD the first time. They touch your foot everywhere..... more than socks. They exert light pressure to your arch, to the hollow around your Achilles, they support your foot TOO well........ loggers out here have to put them back on in the middle of the night to pee, they can't walk on just their feet! Or maybe they just need the extra ht??

Anyways..... good to hear from W'sKANsin, home of LaCrosse, owner of Danner boots.

another item that helps

The foam or gel inserts that are available are a real help to your feet when standing or walking on concrete plus the added insulation if your in a cold climate.

There's also West Coast..............

Shoe (Wesco) that still make a good American boot. Just remember Al, the Vibrams will avoid picking up most everything.......but they don't call 'em "Sh*tgrippers" for nothing. :D:D:eek:

snow skis for feet

Maybe some of you guys can help me. I need a pair of steel toe shop shoes. The problem is my foot is a 10 AA. I have found no one who makes a truly narrow steel toe shoe off the shelf even in woman's sizes. I imagine I can get a pair of custom shoes made but would prefer to buy them ready made. Is anyone one out there who has this same problem and found a solution?

C'mon doc, it seems to me the solution would be obvious to a man of your stature....... "If you can't bring the shoes to the feet..."

You've got the solution in your email inbox and in the back of your hunting magazines....."guarantees 50% increase in girth.".... "longer, thicker, firmer"........"Girth matters!".......!

propluspolypropenylenhanceoviagraextenzaped rubbed assiduously into the old dawgs by you or your SO should get you where you wanna' be in 6wks or less, guaranteed!

of course if your shoes get loose at a match you're probably on your own. ;)

Dr. Tim, What I'm about to tell you is highly classified and could result in my expulsion from the T.C.S.C. (Thirty Caliber Slut Club).

What you need is a pair of 260mm snow skis, preferably used from ebay, Craig's List or another such site. Fiberglass is prefered, but wood will work if the seller won't ship exotic materials to Texas. Cut skis to length. Now, measure carefully and trim one cut ski down it's long axis to fit the width of your dainty pod(s). You can fudge the long axis cut for a custom fit. Add a snappy Cuban heel and you're ready for a night of clubbin' or hangin' with your peeps. A cork sole quickly converts them to a snazzy clog-ish look that's so popular now. No need for those expensive Birkenstocks or the requisite Subaru Forrester and long sleeved flannel shirt that goes along with them.

I'm just sayin'........

Before you go the steel toed route find out if your local hospital has any way of removing them in case of an accident. If they get smashed on your toes many hospitals will simply remove your toes.I had a freind get his big toe get run over by a forklift and the hospital took his toes off.

Dear Als & Butch, Leave it to the three of you to turn a plea for help into an all too gleeful dumpster of feces. Given that, however, you do have a gem of an idea: Cialis shoe inserts. This is the answer to my problem. Do they make them in size 38 jockey underwear also? Tim

Dr. Tim: That's how the cork soles become Cuban heels. ;) The Stiletto Heel model is in the final phases of R&D. There were some initial issues with the heels becoming locked into their fully extended position for over four hours, but that's been mostly overcome.

Low cut briefs will be the first in this expanding market. No whitie-tighties in the line at this time. Boxers are being considered, but field reports from professional cowboys, Iowa bullet makers and base jumpers show the need for added stitching and more material overlap at the critical front opening in the boxers.

Those on the cutting edge will always bleed a little.............

Dr. Tim:

One of my coworkers has very small/narrow feet and yesterday I remembered he'd bought a pair of steel toe work boots before doing some demo work on an old house. I called him and these are the ones he got.

http://www.carolinashoe.com/item.asp?ItemID=1309

He says his feet measure 9.5 & AA width, but he got the 'B' width in these and they fit great.

Seems like my earlier attempt at a bit of humor may have missed wide by a good margin (solidly in the 8 ring?).

My apologies, sir. -Al

8 ring, hell

Dear Al, Your humor hit right on the mark. I appreciate someone who can turn a phrase or riposte. Thank you so much for your good nature ribbing. It is what keeps me entertained. Never stop giving me feces. I love it. Tim
