Shillen Barrel shooters.

I have been told that Shillen barrels are tighter. I have a good load at 52.5 clicks but when I get up to 55 clicks It usually spits a shot. Assuming I am doing my part with the conditions. I am prety sure it is the load. What to try next. I am using 257 bush, barts ultras,133 powder, fed primers,262 neck, neck turned to .0086,20 inch barrel. russell m

SHILEN Barrels

It would seem to me if your groups open up at 55 Clicks you should stay lower where you have better accuracy.

I thought is is to your advantage to have more velocity to buck the wind better.

You cannot get enough velocity to shot through a condition change. Worry about consistent accuracy, not top velocity.

Rifles like to be asked what they like, not told what to do. I shudder to think of the huge amounts of loading components, and barrel steel that have been wasted on trying to get what the shooter wants to work, to work. If a rifle tells you it likes a particular combination, take note, and give it what it likes. It could care less what you want.
Besides, some of the very best shooting that I have seen was done with a slow load, shooting a low BC bullet. In short range Benchrest, accuracy trumps everything. There are no prizes for highest velocity, or BC, or for that matter lowest SD.

Thank you Dick & Boyd. This is exactly what I needed to get my confidence back in my slow load. I have been shooting about 2 years now & have wasted my share chasing loads. russell m

Harrison is correct, you ca't push a bullet fast enough to minimize conditions.
The reason many of us shoot in the upper window is that is where the best agging capability is for our Bullet-Barrel-Powder combination.
You are right in your assumption. If you have a load that seems to be a real screamer, but spits a shot on too many occasions, you are probably too hot.
I can't comment that much on Shilen Barrels, as I have shot nothing but Kriegers for years. But, I have had my butt kicked on quite a few occasions by shooters using Shilens.........jackie

My major problem this past weekend (I recognize it now) is that I've slowed down. I've lost a serious edge. A condition will switch, but I'm still thinking a few seconds before, instead of with it.

I guess it's time to go burn up a coupla barrels - sigh...
