-Shilen Rifles-
I would like to set the record straight. The Shilen DGA action and Hall action are quite different, not just whether made from casting or from bar stock.  Of course, both actions’ function is rooted in the Mauser action, as are all modern bolt actions.  Allan Hall was the production manager, in charge of manufacturing the DGA action at Shilen Rifle in 1970s (Allan had been working for Ed since the mid 1960s, until 1977 ).
Â
The DGA action was created by Ed Shilen with the help of Allan Hall.  The DGA ( short /standard ) receiver was made from investment casting (CM) but the bolt was made from bar stock (8620) with the bolt handle casted from SS. The original DGA actions were square bottomed and octagonal shaped on the top half. The square bottomed model was too heavy to make LV /SP.  Some shooters and gunsmiths turned Shilen DGAs down to round, to cut weight.  Shilen add the longer version (for 06 and Mag) of DGA in the late 1970s.  Shilen also produced a small lot of the round DGAs for BR and handgun metallic silhouette shooters.
Â
In the 1980s a small lot of mini square and round DGAs were added (1â€? shorter than standard). These were specifically for SP/LV and for handgun metallic silhouette competition. Thus, the Shilen DGA has three different lengths , with the angular and round body contours. Also, most DGAs have a flat faced bolt , but after 1980, added a cone-faced bolt for single shot rifles. The DGA bolt diameter is 0.725â€?.Â
Â
I have never seen a Mag DGA round action.  If someone wanted to make a light rifle based on the DGA, there are two options. One is to make a totally round action body, while the other is to cut the corners off the bottom, making an octagonal bottom.   Â
Â
The Hall action is made with a fat bolt. Hall receivers are made from SS (17-4) and the bolt from CM bar stock.  The Hall action has a trigger hanger, which was not available on DGAs sold by Shilen, Inc.
Â
I used to work for Ed Shilen from 1972-1980.  When I started working for Shilen Rifles, the DGA action’s production had not yet start. It was sure fun working there. Turk
