I recently took a new tr-br blank in on trade. and was wondering how good of a short range benchrest stock these were? It is the indian paint stock.

Probably as good as any out there. The only consideration is the weight, what is the finished weight. Anything over 26 ounces is getting too heavy for LV-Sporter use..........jackie

after weighing the stock, its around 30 oz. its inletted for a panda action.

As Jackie said. I've used Shehane "tracker" stocks for 1K light guns. The long range configuration is a different stock, they do just fine. I've never used the "baby" trackers, designed for point-blank shooting. 30 ounces is close to the old 1990s stocks, which weighed about 2 pounds, what my old Macmillan weighed. If you want one of today's heavier scopes, you aren't going to make LV weight. Maybe a frozen Leupold 36 and a 30 ounce stock would work.

Or if you're going to field a VFS rifle, you can probably afford the weight. If it is the wood variety, you can also probably hog out the fore-end some more . . .

You can cut away on the stock inletting in the forend and drilling the butt stock out to try to lose weight, but you'll do a lot of work and not lose much weight.

The Shehane Tracker 1000 is not leagal for registered short range benchrest...it does not meet the buttstock and forend angle requirement...the Baby Tracker is made to the short range BR specifications...
Don't believe me ask Wolf Gray (Dan Batko) he had one on his HV rifle..

Don't believe me ask Wolf Gray (Dan Batko) he had one on his HV rifle before he was old enough to know better...but he got some "learnin" at the first registered HV match he attended...it takes that boy a week to learn a 1 hour job...:D:D:D

All it takes to make a 1000 yard Tracker legal is a cut with a bandsaw and a little reshaping to get the butt taper legal. They can be made into HV rifles, but are too heavy for LV/SP.

the stock i have is for short range benchrest. I was just asking if anybody was actually using one of these.

thanks

Hi,Kevin.
The Shehane stock(Tracker) has the flat bottom on the buttstock. I have been happy with the stock. I recently built a 6BR with it and am pleased. It sounds like you have the Benchrest model. I assume it has the angle on the buttstock. If I owned the stock, I would call Bill Shehane and ask him if he would give you the names of several shooters using that particular stock, and you could visit with them and see how they like them..might be the way to go.

Best,
Dan Batko
