Score match in CT August 15th

At long last the date has been set and the targets, benches, and backers have been purchased. The new addition to the family has arrived, Caitlyn Marie, and now as things are settling down a bit, I can turn my attention to the match a bit more...though somewhat sleep deprived :D.

The first benchrest match at Bell City Rifle Club in Southington, CT will be on Saturday, August 15th at 10a.m.
We will be contesting VFS, VH, H, and factory/semi-custom rifles at 100yds. Official IBS registration is in the works, but I wanted to get the word out there because I know how busy vacation season can be. Dick Grosbier has been most generous and trusting in me, and has offered to list the match officially on the IBS site to get the ball rolling. If there are any unforseen changes in registration I will be sure to post here and on the bell city website (www.bellcity.org).

There will be food (6' subway grinder), soda, and water available for a small donation.

There are four new benches being built to bring the total number to 12, new target frames, and I might be able to talk my wife into baking some goodies for us to snack on at lunch.
Considering this will be the first match of its kind I am unsure of the true number of attendees. I have gotten some good preliminary numbers (thanks to those who have replied), but want to make sure we can accomodate all who are planning to show. Please contact me through this site or email
bellcitybr at yahoo . com.

Anyone interested in volunteering at the match I would greatly appreciate your help. Can't wait to get out there!

Thanks, David. I am very much looking forward to getting matches going there. It should be a lot of fun!

Mike,
I'm glad you are pushing this ahead. A local match is a good excuse to get out my much ignored bench gun. See you there.

We'll have to arrange a time to get out there. I am out of the state from July 13th-25th. My dad, I am sure, will be heading to the range at some point. I need to get some more practice time in, and will keep you posted.
Can't wait to get started.

Hi mike i'll be there too. Gotta start working some loads between the rain drops. Last time I saw this much rain in Ct was 1992 when I decided to build my house.

What kind of help you need? I'll help if possible.

Jo,
Thanks so much for the offer. Target crew, referees, scoring/stats are a good start. I will let you know what it may entail as we get closer to the match.
I will have it all laid out for whomever is able to volunteer.

I will be finalizing my August work schedule this Friday. I will plan to come down. I can bring 4 wheelers, targets, scales, certified weights, or anything else needed. I'd also be glad to help score, call the line, or any other chore needed.

Great to hear, Bill!
That certainly takes a load off my mind. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your offer. I'll be in touch to coordinate the details.
thanks again!

Just a few short weeks before the match, and everything is coming together. Just got back from a meeting at Bell City and there should be a number of factory/semi-custom guns there. Even had an older gentleman who has shot a lot of competitive .22lr come up and say how interested he was in the match and ask if it was ok to shoot a rimfire. Told him it would be in the factory/semi-custom class, but absolutely! Food and beverages will be available for a $3 donation, and it looks like I will have plenty of help...though I don't know if you can ever really have enough!
Thanks again to those who have replied in the affirmative. Keep them coming. I look forward to meeting and shooting with all of you.

questions

Mike,

I'm looking forward to it. How are you going to arrange the matches? What classes/targets/yardages are you going to shoot? What time to start, etc?

I hadn't thought about a factory class, but I could get something together for that one. Even a 40X rimfire if you do a rimfire class. It would be a shame to not bring a gun for each class.

Thanks for getting match together.

Regards, Ron

Ron,
The match will be 100yd VFS, VH, and Hunter classes for the official IBS registered match. The factory and semi-custom classes are unofficial as far as IBS goes, but I suspect there will be a good contingent at the match.
Match starts at 10am, but I would recommend getting there at least an hour to an hour and a half early if possible. There will be a safety meeting, (rules/regs, course of fire, range commands, etc..), registration, flag setup, and choosing benches.
As far as bringing a gun for each class...I am planning on having three relays, and if we get a fair turnout all the benches may be full. It may be tough to have multiple shooters with multiple guns, though I don't want to discourage anyone from coming. If a fourth relay is feasible we will do it. It's tough to deal with the unknowns of a first match. Will the weather cooperate? How many guys will show up? How much will each competitor actually know about the match itself? I had a member of Bell City ask what exactly was meant by "Benchrest"...is there a mechanism on which the rifle rests or is it held. It will definitely be an interesting day, and hopefully a lot of fun.
As far as rimfire goes, I am not going to stop anyone from shooting a rimfire rifle in the factory or semi-custom class if they want to. If the attendees would like a separate rimfire class it will have to be addressed in the future, but the plaques I have on hand only have factory and semi-custom.
I don't want anyone to feel that they can't compete with whatever they bring. This match is the starting point for the future, and I hope that I can foster the spirit of competition, safety, and fun for everyone who attends.
