Big G:
The Talley setup is strong and light. I've set up several 700's with them with good results. Due to the flattened rear bridge and round-ish front reciever ring on the 700's, the front and rear mounts can at times be significantly out of alignment...one can be 'higher' than the other...so it's a good idea to check this and correct it.
The Talley rings are extrusions and are designed to have a 'pinch point' at the parting lines, as they will flex a bit when you tighten the screws. This holds the scopes securely, but doesn't always let the scope tube have max. contact with the rings. It can also scratch and dent the tubes.
Here's some photos of a 700 of mine that I did the Talley's on:
This pic is purposely over exposed so you can see the 'pinch point'. The bases have been bedded to both equalize the ring heights (front and rear) and to give max. contact between the reciever and the base:
A little Dykem or Magic Marker on the bottom and a few swipes with the lapping bar shows where the contact is:
A few more passes and things are looking better. I bed the scope to the rings at this point, but that's another subject:
Same/same on the tops:
Relieve the parting edges to make sure the edges aren't digging into the scope tube. I make sure there's some clearance between these edges and the sides of the tube:
All done:
Here's another one with the same treatment. This is a 300WSM with a big Nightforce on it and the Talley's have hung in there just fine:
Lots of ways to approach this, but this works for me. -Al
