SB Fourteen?

I look through CL sometimes for a heavier lathe than my Light 10. I ran across this one and have no real knowledge of it. The price looks low but I suspect it's because there's zero tooling. Can anyone give me details on the usefulness of this compared to my Light 10? I chamber between centers on my 48" bed.

I found locally an SB Heavy 10 36" bed with some tooling but it's $4500 and only has a three-jaw chuck. I could probably offset that cost a bit by selling my Light 10.

SB Fourteen

I had one of those. They were made in the mid to late 1970's. The speed regulator mechanism is problematic. I would avoid it and find something more modern/common with better parts/accessory availability.
If you do end up with it, I have a new 5C spindle adapter and nose protector for it that needs a new home.

I can Recommend

a used ENCO 14-40 or the like. I have seen them with all their accessories used for $2500 to $3500 used. GEar head machine with a 1.5' spindlehole, very similar to a Grizzly Gunsmith lathe. Not beautiful workmanship but perfectly functional. I have a Central Machinery model like them and it, which replaced my Heavy 10 and it does everything the Heavy 10 did and is more modern. No, it's not a Classic American machine buttttttt.
