Savage/Stevens Stock fit

I acquired a wood Savage stock that nearly fits my Stevens .223. The rear guard screw is positioned correctly but the front action screw is roughly 1/2 a hole off from fitting. There are no Pillars in this stock. I would like to be able to 1. fit pillars in this stock and pull the front hole about .050 from where it is located now. Any suggestions?

Any kind of twist drill is going to want follow the original hole. An end mill or (better) a router bit wont. I don't know what you have in the way of tooling but a router bit in a drill press can solve your problem, if you're CAREFUL and have a secure set-up. Make a pillar on your lathe and you're home free.

These escutchens are a bit over the top but you get the idea. The visible parts are actually just elaborate washers. Take them off and the pillars are visible underneath.

For a hunting rifle they are a pain because they are easy to nick up. For a hunting rifle I would make them out of steel and make them flush with the stock. Blue them to match the metal.

Pete,
first plug the hole with a piece of wooden dowel rod. glue it in and then mark where the new hole is supposed to be. then drill out for the pillar. one can see this in the instructions for chuck robertsons pillar bedding system at www.scorehi.com
