sandblasting woes

AMMASHOOTA

Gary Gruber
i'm preparing to cerrakote a rem 700 action and barrel so i go out to the garage and check the hopper of my sandblaster. it's low so i go down to the hardware store to pick up a bag of 80 grit. no joy. i check 7 different hardware stores (So. Cal. desert), and in an a region that is 70 percent sand, there is no sand for sale.

i think that is called irony.

Two years ago i could walk into a home depot and for around $7 pick up a 50 pound bag (#80) and that would be that. i checked with MSC and they would be happy to sell me a bag for $174 delivered. i finally find a bag of very coarse (and wet) 'general purpose' sand. after letting it dry overnight (about 15 pounds of that bag is water), i start running the rest of it through a sieve to separate the sand from the small rocks. i'm getting about 30% sand out of the bag, which will be more than enough to blast the barrel, action and assorted other parts.

there has got to be a less expensive way of obtaining a bag of #80 or #120. any suggestions? I'm half tempted to just go out into the desert, sit down and start sifting there. i'm not certain how to sift out army ants and scorpions.

Try to find a bag of "play sand" at wally world/Kmart. I'm still working on 2 bags I got a few years ago.
Regards, Ron

The OPEC guys have corned the market and jacked the price up. They are discovering new deposits of sand everyday over there. LOL
I shouldn't laugh. I think those sandblast dealers get their product by grinding up jewelry.

All the tool/equipment rental places around here have blasting sand. Try them.

Stop by my house and take what you want. A sand pit is about 1/2 mile from my place.

how far are you from Austin? my wife wants to fly out Tuesday for a Ray Wylie Hubbard concert. I haven't flown for a while. would a 50 pound bag of sand be considered carry on luggage down there?

Silicosis anyone? That is why you should not use "sand", wear a good respirator.

i appreciate your concern. down here in the desert, we have literally months of high winds with ample quantities of sand blowing in the air. while it is highly irritating, i have not observed any increase in lung disease in the 30+ years i have lived here.

TP Tools carries a lot of different types of blasting grit from glass beads to aluminum oxide. Their shipping cost hasn't been too bad, but you're quite a ways from Ohio. A 50 pound bag shipped to California will cost $40 for shipping alone. Where I live, you don't go pick up anything. Just about everything has to be shipped.

after hand sifting the $3 bag of crap i picked up, i managed to find enought sand to do my action, barrel, recoil lug, and brake. i will probably have to sift a bit more for the bolt and bottom metal, though.

the economy is pretty bad down here right now, CA. is usually the last state to get hit by a faltering economy and the last to recover, but we have been dancing on bankruptcy (as a state) for nearly two years now.

most of the rental companies have closed up -- construction is at a complete standstill save for any state projects that still have a budget left.

i will try all of the suggestions offered and see if anyone around here has anything that looks like a bag of sand.

just a note, if you are blasting stainless or aluminum be carefull of the sand/ media you use. Genaric sand (desert, spoils etc.. etc...) can contain alot of impurities. Oxides, salts and such. good way to introduce oxides in a non oxidising material, or impregnating salts in steel materials. I am assuming you only want minor surface erosion to create a footprint for the coating, I wonder if a media would work?

I just saw this, I by my media at Graingers. Surely, you have one in CA?? I don't use silica sand, it is bad news for sand blasting (health-wise), I use Aluminum Oxide grit and beads. It is not cheap however you get it, I think it runs about $60 a box.

Graingers is great. unfortunately they are 140 miles from here -- but very close to one of my favorite Thai restaurants...maybe lunch this weekend...
