What do you guys think? Is it worth anything as a benchrest rifle or I should forget about it.

it may be a capable varmint rifle as I had a MK II IN 22PPC but not even in the same ballpark as a benchrest rifle. Mine did a very good job on grounhogs as it's intended purpose.

Options informal bench/varmint

If ya just don't like Savages.... Then build a custom Varmint/Benchrest rig from Ohhh say a Stiller Predator action and BE VERY HAPPY!

OR

If ya keep Savage on your list, they will not disappoint... Especially with a quality Smithed highend barrel or quality prefit highend barrel and a tight stress free bedding... Truly capable! An accurate low cost precision shooter.:)

Remington as well but more than likely indeapth Gunsmithing required...$$$
For the $$$ Go with the Predator action and build...Lotta >:)<

All the above "just" short of a True Benchrest competitive rifle...

The Ruger.................... I'll just leave it there.

Butch, since you used the word benchrest with a minor "b", I assume you are talking about a Factory Rifle that you can take to the range, work up some good handloads, and shoot some reasonably small groups, probably in the .500 range. The Ruger would not be my first choice, I would opt for a Savage.
Of course, if you are taking about the kind of Benchrest Rifle, (that is with a capitol "B"), that this Forum represents, of course not. To do that, you need a real, honest to goodness Benchrest Rifle.
Keep in mind, just because a Rifle features a "bull" barrel, and a big flat stock, does not guarantee it's accuracy. Remington has proven this for the past 10 years. It's whats inside that barrel, and the trueness and quality of all of the components, that make the difference.........jackie

I have the rifle you describe, in 25-06 and 22-250, and I have a Ruger XR-100 in 308w.

One of my shooting partners, Mike, has a .308 heavy model 12, left hand.

The Savage and XR-100 shoot single ragged holes with good hand loads.

With hand loads, the 25-06 shoots a .750 group on a good day, the 22-250 shoots a .250 group. Not even in the same ball park.

I think Mike's Savage out classes my XR-100, because it groups almost any ammo well, where my XR-100 only groups a few bullets (165-168gr)

I utterly despise the Savage plastic stock though. My 2 cents.
