Ring on shell

The only thing that I don't like about shooting the rifle is that the heavy bullets result in a fair amount of recoil.
Shoot cast lead .312" to .32" caliber bullets with smaller amounts of pistol or faster rifle powders. Much less recoil, and less wear on the barrel too. See http://home.comcast.net/~gavinsw/guns/castbulletmilitaryrifle.pdf for an example.

Another option: shoot lighter bullets. 123-125 grain, .310" to .312" diameter jacketed rifle bullets are available, and they can also be propelled using smaller quantities of faster burning powders. H-4895 (and IMR-4895) work well for this purpose - see http://www.hodgdon.com/PDF/H4895 Reduced Rifle Loads.pdf for examples of reduced charge loads with lightweight bullets.
