I was looking at some photos here on this page of different shoots. One thing i was noticing is that when the fellas were weighing in their rifles they all had the bolts out and in there hand. I am real close on weight on my 30br actually 2oz heavy but that complete. I bought some lighter scope mounts and rings so i hope this cures the problem. Why are these fellas holding there bolts? Please explain. Thanks Lee

An obvious answer if you think about it. The bolt has to be weighed along with the rest of the rifle. Behind the line there are NO bolts allowed in the rifle, so you carry it.
BTW, most smart shooters will have a "weigh rifle" and a "shoot rifle".

The reason the bolts are out is because at anytime at a Match, the only time you are allowed to have a bolt in a Rifle is when at the firing line, under the command of "commense fire". This is known as the "bolts out rule."
The shooters waiting in line will place their Rifle on the scale, lay the bolt next to it, and the weight is recorded.

Most Benchrest rifles have no safety. And bolt removed is the safest way to conduct your business at a tournament.
People are down range for wind flags, target crews, taking pictures, setting up the bench, etc.....
Sinclair sells a bolt holster.
When done with your five rounds on record, you take out your bolt. You are done shooting.
Local club. AR's get a chamber flag. Also sold at Sinclair and other stores that support shooters.

Actually, only in the NBRSA. The IBS no longer issues that command. The command is "Ready on the right, ready on the left, ready on the firing line. Commense fire"............jackie

sorry for the silly question. I figured this much, but i havent gotten to attend any major shoots yet. I am pretty new a few club level shoots is all i have attended. I am ready to go this coming year though. I cant hardly wait!! I was looking at a lot of pictures and all the pics of the weigh in the rifles were on the scales and the bolts still in hand. do they weight them in separate and calculate the weight?
I hope i get my rifle weight under the limit with the new mounts. the Lawton 20moa scope rail is 7oz by itself so it is going by by. I ordered a set of one piece tally rings, and the fella told me they were 2.7oz combined. I hope he is correct. if he is, i will be under a couple oz, and thats if my scales are close. I ordered a set of mail scales of e-bay. they are plastic and weigh up to 75 pounds. I cant say for sure they are accurate as i dont have anything i can check them with. I will try and come up with something. thanks guys for the help. I really appreciate it, i truly do!!!! Lee

If Tom Libby is a Referee he will walk behind the line with a big stick and woe betide the shooter who loads, or even places a cartridge on the feed ramp, before the Commence Fire command.
And skeet, I WAS kidding about the "weigh" rifle.

That is not a silly question. We in Benchrest often get caught up in our own world and forget that there are multitudes of shooters who are ignorant of many of the things that we do.

Thanks Jackie i have always enjoyed reading what you have to say. Sometimes i feel like i ask to much! I am just really crazy about this hole sport. I was a shotgunner before i entered this sport and i did quite well. All state team a couple years in a row and a couple major state wins and so on. I have the desire to compete and to win. We have a Shooter here in our area, (he lives in Beaumont), Nick Marino, who was also a avid shot gunner before he took up Benchrest. He says Benchrest is about the most aggravating thing he has ever done.
But, he keeps coming back for more...........jackie

I think you are playing with us. I have never seen a sucession of rifles, or
photos of such
at a weigh in so perfectly timed that all bolts were in hand when rifles were weighed. Possibly a photo before bolt was added to the scale and before
the weight was recorded. Jumping to conclusions seems to be your favorite

The picture of Wayne France, #55 is clearly the first step in the process.
He is just trying to center his rifle on the scale. When that is done, he will
place the bolt beside it on the scale. The weight of the gun will not be
recorded untill the bolt is on the scale and Waynes hands are free of
his rifle. The problem you perceive, does not exist
